From our Year 3/4

Potato Olympics

The crowd sits tensely as the Athletes enter the arena. They bounce, stretch and warm up ready to perform in the event they have spent four years preparing for. Their nation's hopes rest on their starchy shoulders…welcome to the Potato Olympics!!

Year 3/4 Students have spent a great deal of this term learning all about the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They have studied their history, and discussed moments that have captivated the entire world. It was only fair that they get the chance to host a Games of their own!

The Potato Olympics is tied to our Health and Physical Education Unit, but students did not simply grab a potato from the cupboard. They created fully fledged athletes from all over the globe, with backgrounds and specialities of their own. It will only be so long until athletes such as Bob Thickchip, Luke Frywalker and Bob Spudernal are all household names! Students did a fantastic job with this assignment, releasing that diversity is another key ingredient that makes events such as the Olympics so special.

After a week spent fleshing out their characters, students nominated events they would like to enter in, and this week have been competing for Gold! Events such as Bowling, Diving, Spinning and more have taken place, with our athletes bouncing around and trying their best! This has not only been a chance to laugh with each other and enjoy some friendly competition, but every single Year Three and Four student has followed the Olympic Values consistently. Friendship, Excellence and Respect have all been on display in each of these meets, and the sound of laughter is only matched by the claps and encouragement the students have been giving each other.

As with everything we do with our students, we are immensely proud of how they have embraced this project. As the week closes out, and some of our Potato Athletes are looking like they are ready to join a mash, we can reflect on the fact that we may be physically apart, but we are always with each other. We can’t wait till we are back on site, to host our medal ceremony and give out some awards!
