As we approach the final weeks of the 2020 school year it is with great optimism that we continue to plan for 2021. The majority of our Year 12 cohort have completed all exams with only a small number of subjects still remaining. The Year 12 exams will be finalised on 2nd December and final results will be posted on 30th December. Best of luck to the class of 2020.

It has been exciting to see the current Year 11s attend their Year 12 orientation program. This is a two week program and has another week to run. The orientation program is a great opportunity to gain an appreciation of the work required during Year 12.

I would like to remind students and parents that part time work during Year 12 is suitable but research tells us that more than 12 hours per week, will and does have an adverse effect on school results at Year 12.

Year 10 into 11 orientation will run one week later than usual this year due to Covid. This will commence on 7th December and run for the duration of the week. Our new Grade 6 (Year 7, 2021) students will attend on-site on 8th December. This day will be an abbreviated Orientation Day but we look forward to meeting our new group of Rosehill students. They will spend a couple of hours at Rosehill and start to get a small sense of the school values of Respect, Initiate and Learning (RIL).

The current Year 11 leaders have spent this week presenting to staff and students as we look to decide who our new school captains and vice captains will be for 2021. This will be announced in the next newsletter. Good luck to all the candidates and a massive thank you to Riley Callick and Stephanie Page for their work this year.

The College has received significant funding to run a ‘tutoring’ program for 2021. We are currently planning on the best approach to meet the needs of our students and are looking to seamlessly embed this program into the school systems. We are seeking to appoint teaching staff who are familiar with our programs and processes and have proven capacity to deliver high quality learning for our students. A small sample of such a program was trialled with 46 Year 10 students over the past 3 weeks, and we believe a combination of in class support and small group sessions will provide the maximum growth for students.

Soon ALL families will receive their subject confirmations and booklists for 2021. This is the perfect opportunity to encourage your children to read their novels in preparation for next year. The benefits of reading are profound and I have previously explained that 20 minutes per day makes a significant long-term difference.

Finally, it’s with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I report the wonderful news that Rosehill Secondary College has been allocated $10.204 million in the recent state budget for continued school upgrades. This money is in addition to the recently completed STEM Centre and oval upgrade (currently underway) and will enable the modernisation and upgrade of C wing, Part of A wing and a new Music and Performing Arts Precinct. I would like to acknowledge the local state member for Niddrie, Ben Carroll for his support in making this funding a reality.
