Cross Country - Athletics
During Term 1 and the beginning of Term 2 Primary students have been spending their sports days preparing for our annual Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. Our students have been learning new skills in a range of events such as long jump, high jump and relay races with the aim to increase participation and increase students confidence to have a go at events that they are not so familiar with. Our primary students also spent time practicing Cross Country during PDHPE.
Primary Athletics Carnival
Guyra Central School held our annual Primary Athletics Carnival on Friday 5th May 2023. This year we had amazing weather and a good show of parents/carers attend to cheer our students on. NSW PSSA Classic Shield Rugby League State Knockout Competition
On Wednesday the 31st of May the Primary Rugby League Football team travelled to Inverell to compete in a GALA Day. Our first game was against Armidale City Public School. Guyra Cental School had a 2 try lead before Armidale City Public School scored. At half time Guyra Central School were still in the lead but knew that they still had to play at the same intensity to win. At full time the score was 32-24 to Guyra Central School.
Try scorers for the game - Lincoln Atkin, Beau Wilson, Max Lockyer, Ryan Vidler and Billy Ryan scored 2 trys.
This meant Guyra Central School advanced to the next game against Moree Public School. From Saturday competitions Guyra Central School boys knew this game would be tough, and already had a disadvantage with only 12 players. The boys knew that they would need to be strong in defence and not let the quick Moree players in. Moree Public School scored first. Guyra Central School and Moree went try for try until half time, where the score was 14-14. Guyra Central School came out from the break with some hard hits from Ryan Vidler, leading to a head knock, dropping Guyra to 11 players until he was cleared. Guyra Central School continued to go try for try until the last minute where Lincoln Atkin ran the ball and scored in the corner, the buzzer went with the score 28-24 to Guyra Central School.
Try scorers for the game - Beau Wilson, Billy Ryan, Max Lockyer x 2, Lincoln Atkin x 2.
All boys played with great sportsmanship shaking hands and cheering for the other team at the end of the game. Winning both games Guyra Central School advance to the next round in Bingara on the 16th June 2023.
Thank you very much to Ainsley Fletcher and Adrian Cameron for coaching and driving the bus and Peter Presnell for doing some drills at school before the game.
NSW PSSA Cassic Shield - North West Finals
On Friday 16th June 2023, the journey for our primary rugby league team continued. The boys travelled to Warialda for their second GALA Day in the NSW PSSA Classic Shield state wide competition. This GALA Day was an important day, the winner would become North West champions and proceed to the state finals.
The first game of the day was against a tough Warialda Public School and the game was action packed right through until the end. Ryan Vidler and Beau Wilson had strong games in the forwards and Lincoln Atkin's speed made it hard for Warialda's defence to stop. Guyra and Warilada played try for try until the full-time hooter. The full-time score was 30-30 pushing the game into golden point. Guyra Central School won the game after Lincoln Atkin crossed the try line for his 5th try during this game. This game was an important game for Guyra Central School, it was the win they needed for the team to qualify for the North West finals.
Guyra Central School and Tamworth team, Westdale Public School played off in the final. The winning team of this game would become the North West Champions and qualify to play in the state finals next term. Guyra Central School with only 14 players, put up a good fight but went down to Westdale 30-0. Beau Wilson was named 'Player of the Day' with his outstanding performance in the forwards. NSWRL representatives commended our younger players - Corey Banfield and Gregory West for their efforts during the day.
Congratulations to Guyra Central School who were overall North West runners-up. Each of our attending students played with determination, sportsmanship and represented our school with pride.
Thank you to Miss Ainsley Fletcher, Mrs Linley Ryan, Mr Adrian Cameron and Mr Peter Presnell for contributing to the success of Guyra Central School in this state wide competition.
PSSA NSW Opens Touch Championships
Sammy-Rose Dowden attended the NSW PSSA Opens Touch Championships in Sydney during week 6 after successful selection for the North West team earlier this term.
Sammy who played link and wing during the carnival spoke highly of the experience playing against some of the best touch players in the state.
This is what Sammy-Rose had to say about the experience -
'This year the girls team finished the carnival 12/13 and we even won a game against South Coast. In recent years the North West girls team have finished the carnival without winning a game or scoring any trys. Our coach and my team were very happy with our achievements. Training and playing with the North West team was great. I think that the training I did and attending the carnival has improved my game a lot. I was able to get to know the girls in my team who come from all around our region. Some of the girls I play against in league tag on the weekends so I will be able to stay in touch with a few of them.'
Sammy-Rose Dowden
Stage 3
Congratulations Sammy-Rose for representing your school and region in touch football this year. Sammy-Rose will continue to play touch this year with our Guyra Central School team in the PSSA State Knockout competition.
Brodi Campbell represents Guyra Central School at CHSSA Opens Rugby League Championships
Congratulations to Bodi Campbell who represented Guyra Central school and North West after his successful selection on the Western side to attend the CHSSA Opens Rugby League Championships which was held in Wollongong during week 5. Brodi played in the 3 day carnival as a centre and wing. This was a fantastic opportunity and experience for Brodi. Guyra Central School congratulate Brodi for his success in Rugby League this year.
PSSA North West Rugby League
On Wednesday 26th May 2023, our school had 8 students attend the PSSA North West Rugby League Trials in Tamworth. Our students each played as part of the Armidale zone in a GALA style day against the zones that form the North west zone. Selectors announced possible and probable teams before selecting the North West teams to play in the NSW PSSA State Championships later in Term 2.
Ryan Vidler and Brax Hutton were both selected in the Under 11s squad. Billy Ryan, Beau Wilson and Lincoln Atkin were all selected in the possible/possibles for the Opens age division. Lincoln Atkin was successful in securing a position for the Opens squad. Congratulations Ryan, Brax and Lincoln. Guyra Central School wish Ryan, Brax and Lincoln all the best and hope they enjoy this amazing opportunity.
Ryan an Brax attended the PSSA NSW state Championships during week 7. The championships were held in Liverpool over three days.
Brax and Ryan have shared their experience with us:
'Before we went to Sydney we attended a training day in Tamworth at Farrer Memorial High School. We got to know our coach and the other boys that we would be playing with. We did some drills and basically practiced to get ready for the games in Sydney. We also had a training session and meeting in Sydney before the Championships. We were given our uniforms at the training session in Sydney. It was good to get to know the other players and now we are all friends. We played six gamed in total during the week. We lost most of the games but we did have a draw in one of the games. Ryan played front row with his friend Isaac and went really well running the ball and in defense. Ryan came close to crossing the line and scoring a try. Brax played in the centres, fullback and as a wing. The week was lots of fun and it was great to have a go at playing football against kids at such a high level and even better that they were able to keep our North West uniforms at the end.'

Stage 3
PSSA North West Rugby League - Opens
During Week 9, Lincoln Atkin travelled 10 hours to beautiful Wagga Wagga for the three day PSSA Opens Rugby League Championships.
Lincoln shared his experience with us:
'The trip to Wagga Wagga was long. It takes over 10 hours to get from Guyra to Wagga Wagga. The weather is very similiar to Guyra in Winter - it was cold! The carnival was held at the stadium in Wagga Wagga where Canberra Raiders occasionally play. The stadium and the fields were very nice. I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to play rugby league at this level. Most of the teams we played against were really good and you could tell that they have all trained and played together as a team. I think that I really went well in defence during the carnival. We did lose all of our games but we did have a couple of really close games. I scored 2 trys over the three days. Overall, it was a great experience and I learnt many new skills, especially in defence.'
