Chess Success

This week we had teams entering the Victorian Secondary Chess State Final at Brighton Grammar, as well as the Girls-only State Final at Glen Eira College.

Both teams certainly did us proud. Our State Final team - Michael Khamatgaleev, Jennifer Morrison, Oliver Cordover, Nathan Stanford, Jennifer McLaughlin and Filia Maualaivao - came 9th out of 29 schools.

This was a fantastic achievement considering the level of talent at this final. Michael Khamatgaleev achieved 16th best player out of 234 players.

At the Girls-only State Final, our team - Jennifer Morrison, Jennifer McLaughlin, Filia Maualaivao, Agatha Beare and Tamia Jung-Phelan - placed 4th, with Jennifer Morrison receiving a trophy for being the second-best player of the tournament.

The school has only recently started entering chess tournaments and we are competing against schools that have very well-established chess cultures. In light of that, I couldn't be prouder or their achievements. Chess club is booming this year and I think it will only get bigger.
