From the Head of Sport

We head into arguably the busiest week of the term with four different sports across Friday and Saturday this weekend and then six different sports in operation next week!! Until we get through the AIC cross country championships on August 12 it will be a very busy time and having schedules up at home will be necessary to stay organised.

Please have a discussion with your son at home about what your schedules look like and how it will be best to balance everything. It is a crucial time to manage any niggling injuries, bumps and bruises, rest often, eat and sleep well!!

HOUSE ATHLETICS

On Wednesday we held our annual House Athletics Carnival. In what is always one of our most enjoyable days of full staff and student involvement, we were, unfortunately, unable to have full student involvement this year and the event focused on our age championship events. We congratulate all students who competed in events throughout the day and in the days leading up to the carnival. The standard of performances reflected the strength of track and field at our College and was exciting to watch. We also thank the many students who assisted with events and the staff who assisted behind the scenes in organising the day. Thank you in particular to our grounds staff and Mr Gary Keown for their assistance in the setup and throughout the day.

While there were many outstanding athletic performances a special mention should be made of Tyler Galligan’s clean sweep of the Open 100m, 200, 400m and 800m for the second year in a row. An exceptional performance by one of our 2019 team captains at a College who is renowned for their athletic performances.

We look forward to congratulating our Age Champions and House Champions for 2020.

RUGBY / FOOTBALL TRIALS

The official seasons for football and rugby union are almost upon us, and with several trials occurring, it is important that students are staying organised and paying attention to APP notices, emails and school notices. Please see the sections for football and rugby for more specific information

BASKETBALL / TENNIS FINALS

Next week sees the final week of our Basketball and Tennis seasons after the final round of competition against St. Laurence’s on Friday and Saturday this weekend. The performances of our teams this weekend will determine the final placings in their pool and therefore determine the final position we will be playing for on August 7 & 8. Good luck for the final round!

AIC XC CHAMPIONSHIPS

On August 12 our College Cross Country team will be defending their AIC Championship at Curlew Park. This will be a tough challenge after we have won the last three AIC titles, and every College will be doing their best to make sure this does not happen again. We encourage all students to make sure they finish their season off with the best preparation possible.

Please check the relevant sporting sections in this newsletter for more specific information.

Kind regards,

David Miles
