Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

As we commence Week 2 our wonderful recreation program is underway to ensure the boarders have plenty of great things to do outside of school time and opportunities to burn off energy. Last weekend the boarders could choose from a range of activities such as touch rugby league (TRL) on our ovals, supervised games in the gym, a trip to the Mission Impossible movie, a shopping outing to Brookside and going to see the Dolphins play the Panthers at Redcliffe. We are very mindful that there are not as many boarders playing AIC sport this term and with this in mind, the school is exploring other co-curricular opportunities to engage the boys on Saturdays. We also have the Boarding Clubs program back underway this week with the boys able to enjoy the music centre, art rooms, the golf driving range and play pickleball. There is so much for the boarders to do!

This week also sees the Boarders’ Tutoring Program recommence. Each year level of boarders is supported by three academic tutors per night in addition to the Boarding Staff on duty. The academic tutors are present to the boys in their study locations during their set study sessions and they are trained to be proactive in their duties by actively showing interest in the work the boys are completing. We also regularly remind the boarders that they should be making good use of the academic tutors to check their work or to help them to understand something they are struggling with. I encourage parents to remind their sons of the tutoring available to them in boarding and to make the most of this help.

Pierce Hardy and I will be representing Marist College Ashgrove at the Boarding Schools Expo in Narrabri this coming Friday and Saturday as well as hosting a function for Marist parents in Moree. We look forward to catching up with many past, present and future families at these two events.

A reminder that there is the Term 3 meeting of the Boarder Parent Network this Wednesday night starting at 6:00pm. All boarding parents and guardians are encouraged to join this online meeting to be connected to all that is going on at the school and especially regarding boarding. A link to this meeting will be emailed to families in the lead-up to Wednesday night and I hope many are able to make it.

Sunday Morning Mass

Boarding Recreation - Mr Malachy Grealy

Week 1 came to an end fast enough and all boys enjoyed getting back into the swing of things! Friday afternoon started with the boarders’ arvo feast which all boys love. It starts the weekend off right! Friday afternoon also saw the return of TRL (touch rugby league) on Hayden Oval. There were over 60 boys down participating, this is great to see! It’s always very competitive and played in great spirits with fantastic skills on show! Friday night rounded out with games in the gym and mega tiggy played by La Valla and Montagne!

Saturday saw the return of Rugby League, Basketball and Tennis with boys having trial games across Brisbane with a lot of boys having great results! All boys that were left in the dorm went down to McMahon to support the First League boys who got a hard fort win 14-6. Saturday night we then headed to Southbank to watch the new Mission Impossible movie. All boys were impressed and really enjoyed it!

Sunday started with morning Mass which then was followed by a Brookside trip for boys to stock up on supplies! On Sunday afternoon, a group of boys headed out to Redcliffe to watch the Dolphins vs Panthers game. It was most boys first time out at Kayo Stadium and all boys had a great time with fantastic seats! Dolphins played well but just couldn’t hold on!
