2019 McGuire Netball

McGuire had two teams entered in the 2019 SNA Winter Competition. The 15U Hawks and 13U Magpies.

The Hawks started off great in the season but after a moving into a higher section,  regrading meant they played some really tough teams, they finished 6th on the ladder. So proud of the girls for never giving up.

The Magpies played brilliantly all year and finished second on the ladder. They made it all the way to the grand final. The Magpies played against Tatura and after a nail biting game they ended up losing by 1 goal.

Well done girls you played well on the day.

Congratulations to the following girls on their accomplishments this season.

  • Tillie Henderson on winning the SNA 13u Section 3 Umpire Vote Award.
  • Hannah Bilney on being runner up for the SNA 15u Section 2 Umpire Vote Award.

REAL Awards

Last Friday, during homegroup, there was an assembly in the gym  for all students. There were two agenda items. The first was to draw the names of seven students who had received REAL slip nominations.

These students regularly model McGuire College’s values – Respect for others, Care for the Environment, Accountability for one’s actions and a passion for Learning. Congratulations to the following students who received a JB Hi Fi voucher for being exemplary role models of these values:  Mia Wilkinson, Fatana Faizi, Cameron Gribble, Hamid Haidari, Marwan Ahmed, Juna Crozier and Kaitlyn Crowhurst. Two more REAL slip draws are planned for Term 4.

The second agenda item was the awarding of the Ilford Photography Award. This an Australia wide photography competition run each term for students who are currently enrolled in one of the following subjects:  Year 9 Digital Photography, Year 10 Photography or VCE Studio Arts. Ali Hussain (Year 10) and Sarah Miller (Year 11) were awarded Certificates of Merits for their entries for Term 2 2019. In presenting these commendations, Visual Arts coordinator Ms Laffy congratulated both students on this outstanding achievement.

Tournament of Minds 2019 Victorian Finals

After an impressive performance at the Regional competition here in Shepparton, team 1 ‘Fame of Flame’ were invited to compete at the Tournament of Minds Victorian Finals at Latrobe University Bundoora, on Sunday 8th September.

Unfortunately, due to clashing schedules, Samantha Comline and Tristan Phipps were unable to attend on the day, leaving Leizal Hawking, Kaitlyn Crowhurst, Alex Tuesner, Jacklyn Crowhurst and Matilda McKenzie to step up to the challenge and represent McGuire College.

An early morning and a long drive made for plenty of time for individual reflection and preparation for the day (a big shout out to Nicole Craighead and Amy Hawking for driving the team down!). As we arrived it was straight into one of the lecture theaters at Latrobe to hear the rules for the day and size up the competition. The team was given their box of supplies, a copy of the challenge, and a time limit of 3 hours to plan their response. The Arts challenge was ‘How can we store and pass along our culture if technology one day fails’.

After a hearty lunch it was performance time. Our team walked into the square nervous, but excited. They created a brilliant presentation starring Alex and Leizal as wise cracking tour guides through the futuristic museum of Australian culture.

Overall the team represented our school tremendously and even though we didn’t move on to the next stage they should be thoroughly commended for their efforts. Well done!
