From the Head of Sport

With only two competitions remaining we are bringing the year of 2020 to a close. For many this will bring a welcome sense of relief and a longing for a return to normality in 2021. No one hopes that is the case more than the MCA sports department. That being said we are still grateful for the opportunities we had this year and particularly for the opportunities our track and field students were given. Following on from the success of our AIC team we had several students continue training to compete at the Queensland All Schools Championships. While we still had several of our top athletes unavailable due to injury and some boys unable to compete whose performances at AIC would have won State medals, the MCA boys who competed continued to do their school proud.

We have listed the results of all boys who competed in the Individual achievements section. We especially congratulate James Leigh who won the State Title in the 13 years 2.5km swim at the QLD Open Water Championships.

As the term is a bit quieter than usual, this will be one of our last Buzz newsletters for 2020 and contains important information regarding our final trials and training for 2020 Term 1 sport. We will release our next issue in Week 5 and our final newsletter will be published on Friday 20 November with information regarding the start of school in January 2021 and our lead in to the first rounds of AIC sport.

AIC GOLF

Good luck to the 5 boys who will compete at the annual AIC Golf Championships on October 26 at Indooroopilly. Thank you to Mr Andrew Fogarty for accompanying the team.

The training schedule for Week 4 has also been uploaded to the College App; please familiarise yourself with this schedule as there are a few changes.

We are in the process of finalising our teams to compete at the AIC water polo competition on Sunday, November 1. Please contact Mr Ryan Apps for any further details.

TERM 1 SPORT PREPARATION

Please see the individual sports sections below for all information regarding the final weeks of trials and training for Term 1 sport. It is important that all boys that are attending all sessions where possible. We head into a busy time towards the end of the year, so it is important all boys are being organised.

  • CRICKET – as part of our ongoing adjustment to COVID-19 restrictions and regulations all players will need to have some of their own playing equipment for the 2021 season and beyond. This includes pads, gloves, protector and helmet.

The college is still allowed to provide bats if required where handles are sanitised regularly. We have been liaising with Keith Dudgeon to supply us with prices for this equipment and all information is provided in the cricket section of this newsletter.

YEAR 12 STUDENTS AS FUTURE MARIST ASHGROVE COACHES!!

In future newsletters, I will mention more about the fantastic efforts of our Senior students this year. With this in mind, I would like to extend an invitation to all of our graduating students to return next year as coaches in our AIC sporting program. We always have a keen interest from Old Boys in being involved in coaching and we hope this year’s graduating class will feel the same. It is a great way to give something back to a program that has offered our students many opportunities. An email will be sent out soon to all Year 12 students with further details.

Kind regards,

David Miles
