Hand and Cough Hygiene

Good hand and cough hygiene are essential to help protect against infection and prevent spread of viruses.

When you practice good hygiene you:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with your inner elbow or a tissue. Put tissue into bin immediately and wash hands for 20 seconds.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, including before and after eating and after going to the toilet.
  • Use alcohol -based hand sanitisers and rub all surfaces of hands until dry. Hand sanitisers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect used surfaces and objects frequently.
  • Increase the amount of fresh air available by opening windows or adjusting air conditioning.
