Magis report

This week sees the first session of the Intergenerational research program run by Griffiths University and involving Magis Year 7.1 and 7.2 option classes and residents  of MercyCare.  Students will interview six residents and write autobiographies which will then be used to produce a hardcover book highlighting the residents’ stories. Most interviews will be completed remotely via Teams,  but there will be a combined morning tea and face to face interviews at Mercy Village on Monday 15 March.

Numbers are now being finalised for the first gifted and talented competition for 2021,  the WADL Interschool Debating  which is expected to begin on Tuesday 23 March at Christchurch.  Currently it is anticipated that we will field 10-12 teams from Years 7 to 12.  Preparation sessions will begin next week, and a full debating handbook will be provided. Nominations will also be called this coming week for the prestigious Da Vinci Decathlon to be held at Winthrop Hall on 29 March (Years 10/11) and 30 March (Years 7-9).  Key teachers will be involved in preparing teams for each of the ten challenging sections.

The Magis House Academic Challenges have commenced with the Academic Spelling series taking part this week.  There were no fewer than 104 students representing their House in the Years 11/12 section, and strong numbers from all years. A full results poster will be attached with next week’s newsletter. Wonderful house spirit has been shown and terrific support for the Magis program.
