Work Place Learning

Future careers

Students trading places

MORE than 120 St Norbert College students are taking their first steps into the workforce.

The Year 11 and 12 VET students have been placed all over the metropolitan area in a 24-day Work Place Learning program that started in Week 3. Some of the long-term employers include Swan Care, Beckenham Primary School, Queens Park Primary School,  St Joseph’s School, Notre Dame, Aegis Parkview, Myer, ADCO, Granada Medical Centre, St John’s Urgent care and supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths.

“The aim is to make the students work ready,’’ said SNC Director of VET, Mrs Michelle Lucas. “It also allows the students to experience work life, gain valuable transferable skills and help with their likes and dislikes when it come to their future career. The employer is able to have extra hands when it comes to day to day work. It is an opportunity for the employer to trial students for future employment.’’

Workplace Co-ordinators Trevor Saunders and Caroline August have been working hard for the past five months to secure the best places for students.

“St Norbert College can not thank the workplace coordinators enough for their hard work,’’ Mrs Lucas said.

Some 56 Year 11 students and 83 Year 12 students are venturing into the community – with some Year 12s picking up where they left off in 2021.

Riley Boyce, who had been placed at Wirrabirra Primary school in 2021, was such an outstanding student the school have asked him to come back. Riley will be completing a Certificate IV in Education Support in 2022 to compliment his work placement and make him employable in the education sector.

Meanwhile, St Norbert College hosted students in Plumbing at our Floreffe Trade Training Centre. Future plumbers were selected to joined our own Jack Langford and Kalista Ubu, who were selected to participate in the delivery of Certificate II Plumbing Pre-apprenticeship.
