AROUND THE COLLEGE

Term 1

WHC Athletics Carnival

On 7 March, the John Landy Field was a sea of Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow for the Annual WHC Athletics Carnival.

With a large number of competing students, it was a jam-packed day of non-stop events! The customary fight between the four houses was a stunning sight with great enthusiasm from all students throughout the day. This was shown with the students giving their best throughout the day and with the conclusion, the age group champions were decided. They were:

  • 13 Females:  Paige Pititto
  • 13 Males: Phoenix Stangel
  • 14 Females: Ayisha Balogun
  • 14 Males: Kirby Donaldson
  • 15 Females: Mia Stevens
  • 15 Males: Fletcher Pulleine
  • 16 Females: Ella Cook
  • 16 Males: Mason Williams
  • 17 Females: Caitlin Charles & Kiara Woods
  • 17 Males: Isaac Bedggood
  • 20 Females: Isabella Grbin
  • 20 Males: Tomas Bartolo

As far as the Grand Aggregate is concerned, the final tally reads:

4th Position: Minerva on 941 points

3rd Position: Vines on 1,046 points

2nd Position: Barton on 1,194 points

1st Position: Quamby on 1,208 points

A big congratulations to Quamby House and their competitors, as well as our overall age group champions!

This event is a massive effort that needs many thanks handed out to willing staff, student helpers and enthusiastic volunteers that make a day like this both efficient and enjoyable for all involved!

Friday 10 March is Pyjama Day - Please wear appropriate PJs to school, making sure you can still participate in all school activities.

A gold coin donation will be collected during home group for those students in PJs. All money raised will be going towards buying school supplies for students in Kagi Village which the Kokoda students will deliver on their trip at the end of this term.

Lunchtime activities on the day:

  • BBQ lunch - $2.50 sausage in bread, $2 soft drinks available to purchase outside the PAF
  • Staff versus student basketball game

We look forward to a great day of fun.

Barwon/Bellarine Division Swimming

On Friday 3 March, a handful of our best swimmers were transported to the Kardinia Pool to compete in the Division Swimming Carnival. Although we didn’t come away with a podium finish in the overall aggregate, we did finish 9th overall. This is a fantastic feat considering our number of swimmers that were competing on the day.

From an individual perspective, we had the following successes:

- Jobe Davies: 1st in 13 Year Male 50m Freestyle

- Michaela Pistorious: 2nd in 13 Year Female 50m Breaststroke

- Edan Ibbetson: 2nd in 17 Year Male 50m Breaststroke

We also had success for our 14 Year Male Freestyle relay team, finishing 2nd in this event. The relay team, Michaela, Edan and Jobe will represent WHC at the Western Metro Region Swimming on 30 March.

A special mention to the staff and student helpers who assisted on the day, without this, these days are simply not possible.

WHC SNR & JNR Lawn Bowls

On Monday 6 March & Thursday 9 March, 22 Senior & Junior students enthusiastically joined a bus to head to the Werribee Bowls Club to compete in the School Sport Victoria Western Metropolitan Lawn Bowls Triples competition.

The morning sessions saw the Western Heights College students divided into different pools and playing a best-of-five-end format. The afternoon session saw the top teams from each pool play off against each other in the semi-finals with the winners progressing to the final.

Excitedly one of the Senior Western Heights College teams (4-Lachlan Sesto, Noah Tullio, Obie Millar) and one of the Junior Western Heights College teams (3-Sienna Sesto, Matilda Ritchie, Mokee Copeland) made it through to the semi-finals. Unfortunately both teams were beaten by a Maribyrnong Sports Academy team who both progressed through to the Final. Many thanks to all participants who conducted themselves in a respectful, humble and appropriate sporting manner despite many of the other opposing students in attendance who played regular competitive lawn bowls. All students have learnt that lawn bowls is an enjoyable skilful game that can be played by all ages.

Get involved in a School Production!

As our school grows and develops in all areas across the curriculum, the Arts Team are discussing ways for students to have the opportunity to extend their skills in the area of performance.

A small-scale theatrical production is currently being considered however we are wanting to gauge interest from the student community to see who would be interested in being involved.

It is a project that would require commitment possibly over a lunch time and an after-school rehearsal each week. It would be developed during term 3 and possibly term 4 concluding with a performance for the school community.

If this interests you, could you please email Ms Doak on Vicki.Doak@education.vic.gov.au to let her know how you would like to be involved.

Canteen orders

This year, the Canteen will be ORDER ONLY for all main food items.  Items such as salad rolls, sausage rolls, schnitzel burgers etc NEED TO BE ORDERED. The first 10 minutes of recess and lunch will be allocated to collection of food orders only. The canteen will then be open for any additional purchases of drinks, snack items, yogurts, sugar free icy poles, sorbet etc.
