Grade 4 Bike Ed

Extension Writing Workshops – Grades 3/4 and 5/6

On Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th March, selected Chilwell and Fyans Park students from grades 3-6 attended two full-day extension writing workshops with Jodi Toering, a teacher and award-winning children’s author.

During the grade 5/6 day on Monday, we learnt about character development, atmosphere/mood and imagery to engage, orient and affect the reader. On Tuesday, our 3/4 students learnt about the writing strategy of ‘show, don’t tell’, as well as including literary devices such as metaphors and personification for added interest.

It was a fantastic experience to meet a real-life author and learn about the secrets of writing a book! Jodi was very enthusiastic about writing, answered our questions and gave us valuable feedback. We also got to read some of her published picture books, which were very descriptive with beautiful illustrations: Mallee Sky, Night Watch and Rain on the Rock. We are grateful for the opportunity to improve our skills and are looking forward to using some of the tips and strategies in our future writing.
