Student Celebrations

We love celebrating our students' achievements both in and out of school! If your child has recently been involved in any accomplishments outside of school, we'd love to celebrate them in the newsletter. Please email nicolle.brown@education.vic.gov.au
It has been a very busy few weeks for the CGPS Chess Team!
2nd Place in Victoria – Among 55 Finalist Schools!
On 10th November, against a highly competitive field of 55 finalist schools, our CGPS team secured an outstanding 2nd place overall in Victoria, finishing just behind Glen Waverley PS and ahead of powerhouse chess schools such as Balwyn North PS and Glendale PS. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication, teamwork, and strategic skill each player has developed throughout the year.
Just one week later, on 18th November, our students competed in the Victoria State Grand Finals, delivering one of the strongest performances in CGPS chess history. Facing an Olympiad‑style tournament with exceptionally tough opponents, the team battled through high‑pressure rounds to secure an incredible 2nd place out of 16 semi‑finalist schools.
This result qualifies CGPS for the National Championship, where our players will compete against the top school teams from across Australia.
Emotions ran high throughout the day, and the final standings remained uncertain until the very last game — with CGPS finishing just 1 point ahead of Balwyn North PS. It was a nail‑biting finish and an unforgettable moment of triumph for our team!
We are thrilled to celebrate these exceptional achievements on the state stage!
A Year of Growth, Dedication, Resilience, Sportsmanship, and Team Spirit
Our players demonstrated impressive resilience under pressure, strong sportsmanship, and consistent tactical excellence across all rounds. This success reflects both individual effort and the collective commitment of the entire team. CGPS chess players showed maturity beyond their years — displaying focus, confidence, and impressive board awareness. Their achievements are a proud moment for the school and a testament to the strength of our growing chess team!
Throughout the year, students attended training sessions, lunchtime practice matches, and interschool competitions. Their consistent effort and enthusiasm have truly paid off.
We would also like to acknowledge the wonderful support from parents, teachers, and staff who encouraged and supported the students every step of the way.
Looking Ahead
With such strong results, we are excited for what comes next. The CGPS Chess Team continues to grow in confidence and capability, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the new year.
Once again, congratulations to all our players. Well done, Xinyao Fan (6D), Nabil Ibrahim (5C), Liam Nguyen (5/6E), Aidan Batyrbekov (2B), Kaisar Batyrbekov (4B), Ryan Subhash (Prep A), and Scott Liang (2B)! You have made your school incredibly proud.
