READING AND WRITING

We are beginning to explore parts of speech and identifying the who (nouns), what they are doing (verbs), and using describing words (adjectives).

A simple sentence is made up of a who and what doing (noun and verb). We can make our sentences more interesting by adding more detail using descriptive words.

This video about Rock Pools inspired us to make our own classroom rock pool. Using art materials, we created different parts of a rock pool that we could write about using descriptive words.

The story Elmer also inspired us to use adjectives in our writing. Using a who, what doing, and a describing word about our own Elmer Elephant, students worked to write a simple, yet more interesting sentence.

We love listening to a good song (well Mrs. Johns loves a good song) that can help us to learn.

We have a variety of writing abilities in our classroom but that does not mean we are not all writers and authors. Writing, telling stories, and sharing ideas can take place in many shapes and forms in our classroom. From attempting to form letters and write words, to constructing sentences or even detailed pictures are all ways we can communicate and share ideas and messages. Just because we are not writing detailed sentences or writing a lengthy story...yet...doesn't mean we are not authors who are creating and sharing wonderful stories and ideas.

NUMERACY

In maths we are continuing to build or understanding and recognition of numbers. We have been enjoying playing bingo and making numbers using different manipulatives. This week, for some of our older students in the grade, we have been learning about the rules of the place value houses. Knowing the rules helps us to better understand the value of digits and why we write numbers the way we do e.g. 12 is 1 ten and 2 ones, 57 is 5 tens and 7 ones.
