Supporting Good Handwriting at Home ✏️

As part of our handwriting instruction at Rollins Primary School, we are explicitly teaching students about good pencil grip and posture to help them develop efficient and comfortable writing habits.

When writing at home, you can encourage your child to:

• ✏️ Use a tripod pencil grip – the pencil is held between the thumb and index finger and supported by the middle finger.
• 🤚 Remember that left-handed writers may hold their pencil differently – the same principles of pinch, support and a relaxed grip apply.
• 🪑 Sit with a straight back and avoid leaning heavily over the page.
• 👣 Keep both feet flat on the floor to provide a stable base for writing.
• 📄 Position the paper at a slight angle, depending on which hand your child writes with.
• 🖐️ Keep the wrist and fingers relaxed rather than gripping the pencil tightly.
• 👀 Position the page comfortably so your child can see their writing without twisting or hunching over.

These small habits can make a big difference to writing fluency, comfort and stamina as children develop their handwriting skills.
