Yr 9 - Visual Art

In the first week of Term 3, our Year 9 Visual Arts students had the incredible privilege of welcoming practising Aboriginal artist Merindah-Gunya for an immersive incursion.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about Aboriginal culture, hear Merindah-Gunya’s inspiring story, and collaborate directly with a professional artist. Together, they used acrylic paint on canvas to bring a student-designed narrative to life. Congratulations students.

Ms De Leggo & Ms Kerrilee Pearson

"‘Blue Spirit Journey’ was created in collaboration with Aboriginal artist Merindah-Gunya by our Year 9 Visual Arts class. It tells the story about our school and our class. The key story elements include people coming from overseas to symbolise our multicultural history. A meeting place connected by other meeting places shows us all coming to school from our homes. The waterway throughout symbolises our connection through tradition. The animals surrounded by the water also show connection to the country. The journey lines at the bottom are for each level we go through at school. The school camp is on the side, surrounded by mountains. A large star in the top right corner symbolises God. The surrounding communities are for all of our families."

Vinnies Winter Appeal

The generosity of our Killester community was on full display through this year’s Vinnies Winter Appeal, with hampers overflowing with donations from our students, staff and families.

These much-needed items were delivered to the St Joseph’s Springvale Vinnies Food Bank, where they will provide practical assistance and support to people experiencing hardship within our local community.

Through this collective effort, our community has once again demonstrated our motto of Strength and Kindliness and embraced the values of Hospitality and Compassion by responding generously to those most in need.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the appeal. Every item donated represents a small act of kindness that, when combined with the generosity of others, can make a meaningful difference.

Thank you, Killester, for living with justice, leading with courage and serving with compassion.

Celebrating Success in the Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition

Killester College students have once again achieved outstanding results in the prestigious Dante Alighieri Italian Poetry Competition, held annually at the University of Melbourne.

The competition provides students studying Italian with the opportunity to select and memorise a poem before presenting it to a judge, demonstrating accurate pronunciation, intonation, expression and understanding. Through the experience, students also develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty of spoken Italian and the country's rich literary tradition.

At the end of Term 2, an impressive 86 Killester students from Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in the competition, with 13 students progressing to the Poetry Finals on Tuesday 14 July. Finalists compete amongst the top 10% of participating students across Victoria.

We are delighted to congratulate two of our Year 9 students who achieved outstanding results at the state finals:

🥈 2nd Place – Sofia F. “I mesi” by contemporary poet John Lando

🥉 3rd Place – Amelie K. “La Divina Commedia, Inferno, Canto 1 (versi 1–12)” by Dante Alighieri

These are exceptional achievements, and we congratulate Sofia and Amelie, along with all 86 students who represented Killester so proudly in this year's competition.

Tantissimi auguri to all our students!

Visual Communication Design and Fashion Excursion

On Tuesday 4 August, three classes from Killester College visited 'Bunjil Place' in Cranbourne to experience 'The Offbeat Sari' exhibition. The excursion included the Unit 2 Product Design (Textiles), Unit 2 Visual Communication Design, and Year 10 Culture & Fashion classes.

The Offbeat Sari is a touring exhibition from London that celebrates glamour, innovation, sustainability, and the use of unconventional materials. Featuring 50 exceptional works by Indian designers, wearers, and craftspeople, the exhibition explores the contemporary sari as a powerful symbol of modern India. It highlights how this traditional garment continues to evolve, with city commuters pairing saris with sneakers for everyday practicality, while others embrace the sari as a statement of identity, social resistance, and protest.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition and were inspired by its creativity, craftsmanship, and contemporary interpretations of a traditional garment. They will draw on the ideas and design approaches they encountered as inspiration for their own designs in upcoming units of work.

Winter Sleepout 2026

60 students and 16 staff came together for our Vinnies Winter Sleepout, sleeping in solidarity with people experiencing homelessness and taking time to learn, reflect, pray and act.

Throughout the evening, students explored the importance and meaning of home with Vinnies and participated in a Finding Shelter sleeping-rough simulation, sitting in different outdoor areas of the College and reflecting on what it might mean to face a night without warmth, security or a safe place to call home.

We were privileged to hear from speakers from Wayss Dandenong, who helped us understand the many faces of homelessness within the City of Greater Dandenong and reminded us that homelessness does not always look the way we might expect.

Our evening also included prayer and reflection for people experiencing different forms of homelessness. We shared a simple dinner of soup and bread, similar to a meal served from a Vinnies Soup Van, and students prepared care packages for Vinnies to distribute through their Soup Van program.

Together, we raised an incredible $1,231 for the Vinnies Winter Appeal.

After a cold night, everyone was welcomed with a hot egg and bacon breakfast before students and staff headed into Friday classes - perhaps with a deeper appreciation of the warmth, safety and security of home.

One night cannot replicate the experience of homelessness, but it can open our eyes, challenge our assumptions and inspire us to make a difference.

Yr 11 VET Cookery - Teen Chef Competition

Four of our talented Year 11 VET Cookery students, May N., Diana P., Chau N. and Rose K., recently represented Killester at the SEGAP Teen Chef Competition, an annual culinary event for secondary students within the South Eastern Girls Activity Program network.

Inspired by MasterChef, teams were given just 90 minutes to prepare a main course and dessert, with their dishes judged by professional chefs from the Australian Culinary Federation.

Facing strong competition from Kilbreda, Sacred Heart and OLSH, our students produced two impressive dishes: Char Siu Chicken with handmade noodles and seasonal vegetables, followed by Chocolate Fondant with dragon fruit purée, coconut and lime Chantilly cream and cacao nib crumble.

Their efforts earned them a Gold Medal, awarded to competitors achieving an outstanding score of between 90 and 99 out of 100. Both dishes were also highly commended by the judges.

May, Diana, Chau and Rose represented Killester with Strength, Kindliness and professionalism, and we congratulate them on this wonderful achievement.

A huge thank you to Lucy Collins, Mark Pudney and Georgie McLean, whose support and guidance were integral to the students' success.

KCEB Powers Ahead Towards Maryborough

It has been another busy and productive term for our Killester College Energy Breakthrough (KCEB) team as preparations continue for the Maryborough Energy Breakthrough in November.

Throughout Terms 2 and 3, students have been putting their STEM skills into action, focusing on the engineering, design and sustainability aspects of the program. Work has included improving the aerodynamics of the trikes, testing rolling resistance using Newton force meters and refining drive trains to improve efficiency. Students have also continued collecting bottles and cans through Victoria’s 10c Container Deposit Scheme, combining sustainability with fundraising for the team.

A highlight has been bringing the 2026 trike theme to life - Strawberry Shortcake!

Following a student vote, our three trikes will take on the colourful identities of Blueberry Muffin, Strawberry Shortcake and Lemon Meringue. Students have been developing the colour schemes, uniforms and exterior designs to complement the theme.

The decision not to compete at Sandown in July allowed the team to focus on rebuilding and upgrading the trikes, including replacing chains and gears, to ensure they are ready for the challenge ahead.

KCEB has also been incredibly fortunate to receive generous support from our growing community of sponsors. A special thank you to our Silver Sponsors, Commercial Brake and Clutch & Belimo Pacific, and our Gold Sponsor, Smash Burger Club for supporting our students as they design, build, innovate and develop valuable real-world STEM skills.

With the Maryborough Energy Breakthrough now getting closer, our KCEB students are looking forward to putting months of planning, problem-solving, teamwork and engineering to the ultimate test in November.

We can't wait to see our Strawberry Shortcake fleet hit the track!
