Green Thumbs & Cooking Crew

San Choy Bow 04/09/2026 - Green Thumbs and Cooking Crew: A Delicious Team Effort!

Last week, our Green Thumbs and Cooking Crew joined forces for a hands-on, tasty activity: making mince in lettuce cups! The Green Thumbs harvested fresh lettuce, spring onion, and giant red mustard straight from our Vegepod. Meanwhile, the Cooking Crew got busy in the kitchen: cooking the mince with grated carrot, chopped giant mustard, sliced spring onion, and a dash of soy sauce. The lettuce was washed and pulled apart ready to serve our meal in and garnished with fresh parsley.

The result? A delicious meal for everyone to share, packed with homegrown flavour! Our students couldn’t get enough —many asked for seconds. Some students suggested that the meal needed a splash of sweet chilli sauce on top for some extra flavour. Later that day, we shared the mince lettuce cups again with families at our after-school working bee.

The Green Thumbs are keeping our garden growing strong by starting seeds in punnets and placing them in the Vegepod to germinate. We’re looking forward to watching cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin, lettuce, basil, sunflowers, and green beans sprout —ready to be planted out later in the spring for a summer harvest!

A huge thank you to the parents who helped during the working bee, building new compost bins and moving trellises into the vegetable patch. We’re excited to plant out the vegetable garden early next term, as the frosts fade away.

Kids Teach Kids lessons

Miss Miley - Miss Miley was very confident whilst teaching her lesson. She read out some facts about chooks which were very interesting. Did you know chooks can't walk backwards? Miss Miley taught us that among quite a few other facts. We then had a game of "Chook finds her Chickens" which was a version of Hide and Seek with a twist. I thought I had the best hiding spot ever behind the sandpit but apparently not - the chook found me quite quickly! A very informative lesson and Miley's preparation for her lesson was demonstrated in her engagement and preparedness.

Miss Aubree - Miss Aubree was quite at home sitting at the front of the class demonstrating to her students how to draw a bird! She then continued to give further instructions as to the details that everyone could add to their pictures. There were some beautiful masterpieces created under the guidance of Miss Aubree.  I think we could have a teacher in the making here! I was certainly under impression that it wasn't Aubree's first time 'being the teacher".

Master Joey - Master Joey provided us a very fun lesson of boxing. He very earnestly talked us through the safety requirements and behaviours we needed to follow to keep everyone happy and safe. Then students paired up with one partner wearing boxing gloves and the other wearing pads and the students practiced their cross motion boxing moves. The students were very responsible and listened to Master Joey's instructions very carefully making it a very fun and engaging lesson. It actually ignited quite a few requests for doing boxing for sport in the future!

Miss Holly - We had bikes going left right and centre in during Holly's Kids Teach Kids lesson! Holly's introduction to the lesson was to explain the activity of tracing a picture of a motorbike which she supplied for each student, then taping another piece of paper to the picture and then writing down some safety rules to follow when riding a motorbike. It was a good lesson including an introduction, an activity and a sharing of the end product at the end. I actually think the students would still be there engrossed in the activity if the adult teachers didn't have to encourage Holly to wrap up the lesson!
