Staff Interfaith Day
On Monday, May 25 the staff from St Joseph’s and St Laurence’s travelled to Melbourne for an Interfaith experience. Staff were immersed in two religions - Judaism and Sikhism. During the day teachers had the opportunity to be in dialogue with leaders and members of these two faiths. A recurring theme for the day was, finding the commonalities between Catholicism and the Jewish and Sikh faith. The day began by attending the ARK centre in Hawthorn. Here Rabbi Gabi led us through an experience of the Jewish Faith within the beautiful setting of a Jewish Synagogue. We learnt about the Ark and the Torah. In a session called ‘Human Library Books,’ Jewish people told us about their lives and answered questions.
Next stop, Blackburn Gurdwara, home of the Sikh faith. In this sacred space all visitors showed respect by covering their heads with a headscarf. We enjoyed a scrumptious vegetarian lunch of dahl, curry, rice and yogurt provided by the Gurdwara. For many of the teachers, the Sikh faith was new learning. We visited their temple and were invited to meditate. The day concluded with a representative from each of the three faiths present praying a final blessing from their faith.
Our teachers’ next goal is to bring this learning into the classroom.

Thank you to everyone who supported our day of action this morning, including those who had the day off and came and stood with us. Your support is very much appreciated.
