What’s Happening in Year 5 in November

Hi Year 5 community, we hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of term 4.

Year 5 will be completing Bike Ed, with forms due by Friday the 30th of October. Please return them to the classroom teachers when possible. This will be an educational but fun program for all students.

We are continuing to explore the Respectful Relationships curriculum. In the month of November, students will participate in Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships lessons. The focus will be on Topics 5, 6 and 7.

Topic 5: Stress Management supports students to consider the causes of stress and develop a range of self-regulation and coping strategies they can draw on to manage stressful situations.

Topic 6: Help-seeking helps students to develop skills and knowledge for peer support, peer referral and help-seeking.

Topic 7: Gender norms and stereotypes helps students consider the influence of gender norms on attitudes, opportunities and behaviour, and to learn about gender equality, inclusion, human rights and the importance of relationships that respect people of all genders.

It is hard to believe we are already well into our final term of Grade 6! Term 4 has certainly started with a bang, with our students enjoying a range of special experiences alongside plenty of learning in the classroom. Our recent excursion to the South Melbourne Market was a particular highlight, giving students the opportunity to see Economics and Business concepts in action as they explored how stallholders advertise, compete, attract customers and make their businesses successful.

What are we learning?

Our South Melbourne Market excursion has provided the perfect springboard into one of the most anticipated Grade 6 projects of the year – the Grade 6 Market Stall Day! Students are now busy developing their own business ideas and learning what it takes to plan and run a successful market stall. They are considering their target market, budgeting, pricing, advertising, competition and financial decision-making as they work towards Market Day on Friday 4 December.

In Maths, we will be focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages, developing students’ understanding of the connections between them and applying these skills to real-world problems. There will also be plenty of opportunities to put these mathematical skills into practice as students budget and make financial decisions for their Market Stall businesses

We will continue reading Holes by Louis Sachar and exploring the many themes, characters and connections woven throughout the novel. Students will then draw inspiration from their reading as they plan and write their own narrative response.

Our Wellbeing learning will continue through the RRRR program. As students approach the end of primary school, we will also continue supporting them as they prepare for the changes, opportunities and challenges that come with transitioning to secondary school.

An exciting finish to Grade 6!

There is so much to look forward to as we head towards the end of our students’ primary school journey!
