My name is Kate Fleay and I thought I would share with you a bit of my background and why I’m excited to be working as the Acting Program Coordinator of Teaching and Learning at WACOA-Denmark for the rest of Term 3. While at WACOA Denmark for the remainder of the term I plan to;

  • Support our ATAR students with such things as the Yr 12 ATAR Mock exams coming up
  • Ensure staff and students in both general courses are supported with the curriculum
  • Be available for parents who need any assistance or information.

I grew up on a mixed farming property in the Midlands of Tasmania with Herford cattle, Superfine Merinos and Corriedales and growing potatoes, barley, peas, and poppies-for the pharmaceutical industry under irrigation.

I then came to WA to do my teaching degree, met my husband and lived on a mixed farming property in Kojonup (cropping, Crossbred and Merino flocks and Angus and Speckle Park cattle) while I was teaching secondary students at the local District High School. Later I took on the role as a Level 3 Deputy Principal and have a passion for students with educational needs and a holistic approach to education through academic and social/emotional wellbeing.

Our family, including my 2 children William and Fenella, moved to a farm we purchased at Peaceful Bay at the end of 2021 and have continued to farm cattle there. I feel I have a strong understanding of the values and needs of someone who has worked in many facets of agriculture including manual labour and as a tertiary educated employer in the industry and hope that will strengthen connection with the students as we work together.

I have filled in as relief at Denmark Ag and have loved the positive atmosphere among both staff and students and I look forward to being part of the team and supporting the students in their learning. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or if your child needs support kate.taylor2@education.wa.edu.au.
