Wellbeing Corner - Protect Your Reading Space

In our busy world, where notifications, screens and schedules compete for our attention, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the opportunity to slow down with a good book.

Creating and protecting a reading space isn’t just about improving literacy—it is about nurturing wellbeing. Whether it’s a comfy chair, a cosy corner, a beanbag or a

blanket fort, having a special place to read encourages children to pause, be present and enjoy the moment.

Reading offers so many benefits for both learning and wellbeing:

● Improves vocabulary, comprehension and a love of learning.

● Builds concentration and attention by giving the brain a chance to focus on one thing at a time.

● Reduces stress and promotes calm by allowing children to switch off from busy minds and busy days.

● Encourages empathy as children experience life through the eyes of different characters and develop a deeper understanding of others.

● Creates meaningful family connections when parents and carers read with their children or simply talk about the stories they share.

Even just 10–20 minutes of uninterrupted reading each day can have a lasting impact. It helps children develop confidence, curiosity and resilience while creating healthy habits that support lifelong learning.

This week, we encourage every family to protect their reading space. Put devices aside, make reading a daily routine and enjoy a few quiet moments together. Those small, consistent moments not only strengthen literacy skills but also support children’s emotional wellbeing and remind them that slowing down is something worth making time for.

“A book is more than words on a page—it is an opportunity to connect, imagine, grow and simply be.”

Happy reading!
