2026 Barwon Junior Debating Competition – Round 1

On the afternoon of Wednesday 27th May, our two Year 6 debating teams travelled to Christian College Highton for the first round of the Barwon Junior Debating Competition. The topic was That Petrol Cars Should Be Banned by 2030.

Chilwell A was arguing for the negative. Shayaan was 1st speaker, George was 2nd speaker, Millie was 3rd speaker and Harry was supporting with rebuttals. Chilwell B was arguing for the affirmative. Lexi was 1st speaker, Abbie was 2nd speaker, Felix was 3rd speaker and Liam was supporting with rebuttals.

They were both high-quality debates, with compelling arguments and rebuttals from each side. In the end, Chilwell won both debates, with George and Abbie winning Best Speaker awards. Well done to all our debaters, who have put in many hours of preparation and practise.

We are now focussed on round two, which is less than two weeks away. We will be debating the topic, That Voting in Australian Elections Should Be Voluntary.  We will be hosting teams from Leopold Primary and Geelong Grammar and will keep you updated on the results.
