Board of Governors Update

In the spirit of our 2026 theme, ‘Listen In; Lean In...as the Way Opens’, the Board of Governors continues to reflect deeply on how we steward The Friends’ School with care, foresight, and regard for our Purpose & Concerns.

Recent months have been shaped by the outcomes of an externally facilitated governance review. The review confirmed that the Board is operating effectively, with a strong sense of shared purpose, robust financial oversight, and a culture of openness and respect. Importantly, it also challenged us to continue growing. In response, the Board has committed to several priority areas that will guide our work through 2026 and beyond.

Foremost among these is environmental sustainability. While significant groundwork has already been laid, this year has been identified as a time for action. The Board has agreed to engage external expertise, re-energise committee oversight, and ensure that progress in reducing our carbon footprint is measurable and regularly reported.

Workforce sustainability is another key focus. The Board is very mindful of the pressures facing educators and schools nationwide. Building on work already underway through our senior management, workforce sustainability has been formally added to the Strategic Risk Register. We are strengthening the way information is reported to the Board so that risks, trends, and opportunities relating to recruitment, retention, and wellbeing are better understood and addressed.

The governance review also affirmed the importance of Board culture and induction. Directors have expressed a shared desire for a Board environment that is inclusive, enquiring, and supportive, where members feel confident to ask questions and engage strategically. Further work is underway to deepen our understanding of the School’s culture, Quaker values, and the contemporary education landscape as part of ongoing Board development.

Alongside this work, the Board continues its steady oversight of School operations. We are encouraged by strong enrolments in 2026, progress on campus improvements, and the strength of reporting and compliance across the School.

As always, I thank my fellow Board members, the Principal, and the Leadership Team for their commitment and thoughtful contribution. We remain committed to listening carefully to our community, discerning wisely, and supporting the School as it continues to flourish.
