Learning Update

From Mr Collins 3-6

Week 6&7!!!!!!!!  Don't tell the kids I put the magic numbers together. The really busy part of the term has begun, and we are desperately trying to keep our programs running normally despite all of the exciting activities we have been a part of.

English

We have completed our unit on explanation writing. The kids have now published two explanations, both times going through the writing process to plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish quality texts. These have been collected and can be viewed during your student learning conferences. We finished our mentor text titled 'Grandma Forgets'. This text told all about a family dealing with the troubles of a family member with dementia and the importance of memories.

Things are getting tense in our class novel! I hope the kids are telling you all about this at home.

Maths

Daily Review!!! We have started doing daily reviews in the 3-6 class. This process is similar to the Mathsmate. Each day we spend a short period of time working on what we have been learning the day, week and even month before to help students move newly learnt knowledge into their long-term memory.

TRP (The Resilience Project)

Lesson 13 discussed the term 'Anger' and how it has so many other meanings. The kids and I spent time looking at the exact causes for anger to plan ways of dealing with it before the volcano erupts.

PE

SWIMMING LESSONS!!!

The first lesson at Gurri Wanyarra was incredible. The kids were separated into 3 ability groups and immediately began working on their skills in the water. It's always nice to see the excitement on the pool staff's faces when they realise it is our kids returning for lessons. We sure have made quite the impression. Let's hear what Grade 3 student Stevie had to say about the session...

Integrated Studies

Life as a convict in Australia in the early 1800's surely was tough... Or was it? This week the kids researched what it was like living in Australia as a convict and how different work and home life was for all those who travelled.

P/2 Learning Update – Weeks 6 & 7

Literacy

In this age of technology, we have been focusing on the importance of writing with pencil and paper. Regular handwriting practice helps students develop letter formation, fine motor skills, pencil control and writing fluency.

We have also been learning about the suffix -ed and how it can be added to a base word to show that something has already happened and for our older kids we have been learning that no English word ends in j. Instead, g brings e out to play!

Numeracy

The kids are enjoying our improved Daily Review routine, which provides valuable retrieval practice at the beginning of each Maths lesson and helps us revisit and strengthen previously learned skills.

Students have been investigating temperature, while also integrating our Auslan learning about weather. Week 7's topic has been exploring the difference between volume and capacity through hands-on water activities. The kids have learnt that Volume is the total amount of three-dimensional space an object or substance takes up, while capacity is the maximum amount a container can hold.

To top it all off we have also completed the Year 1 Numeracy Check – a fantastic effort!

Integrated Studies

Our learning about Rules and Laws has continued, with students creating a class rule poster that is now proudly displayed in our classroom. We have also been learning about our community and the people who help us, including nurses, vets and firefighters.

As part of this learning, we created a special thank-you card for the Raywood CFA and hand-delivered it to the post office. It was wonderful to see students thinking about how we can show appreciation for the people who support our community.

The Resilience Project

F-1 students took on the STEM Bridge Challenge, inspired by The Rabbit Listened. Students worked collaboratively to design and create a bridge out of blocks and cardboard, developing their problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills along the way. Both bridges successfully held a toy Frank!

Prep Transition

It was fantastic to welcome our 2027 Preps back for another transition session! We loved having them join us and look forward to seeing them continue to grow in confidence as they get to know our school and classroom.

STEM & Kitchen Garden Program (KGP)

The students had such a great experience participating in the science incursion last week. They enjoyed all areas of STEM! This week we spent time finishing our water hero posters. Next week we will begin some STEM challenges. This will test the student's problem solving and collaboration skills.

Over the last few weeks, we have had a lovely time in the kitchen! Last week the students all made zucchini slice before we began our Science Incursion. This week the senior students made chicken and pumpkin risotto for the school to share, and the junior students made rosemary and sea salt focaccia to go with it. The team work and culinary skills the students are learning are great! I am really proud of their efforts.

We spent some time checking our veggie garden this week. We have potato plants coming up as well as other veggies! Big plans for these in the kitchen!
