Hello from the Autism Inclusion Teacher,

JFA Purple Orange: Supporting neurodivergent students transition to High School

We were delighted to welcome JFA Purple Orange to our school recently for a special presentation focused on supporting parents and carers through the important transition from primary school to high school. Transitioning to high school is a significant milestone for students and their families, and our goal is to ensure everyone feels supported and well-informed throughout this process.

This workshop was particularly targeted at neurodiverse students, but the information shared and strategies discussed are relevant and beneficial for all students and families preparing for this transition.

During the session, JFA Purple Orange covered several key topics, including:

• What is a Transition Plan?Parents learned about the purpose and value of a transition plan, and how it can support students to have a positive start to high school.
• Supporting Student StrengthsThe presentation emphasised the importance of recognising and building on each student’s unique strengths and interests during times of change.
• Available SupportsInformation was provided on the types of supports that can assist students and families, both within the school and from external organisations.
• Self-AdvocacyEncouraging students to have a voice and develop the skills to speak up for themselves was a key point of discussion, highlighting its importance for high school and beyond.
• Collaborative PlanningThe session also explored how families, students, and schools can work together for the best possible outcomes, ensuring everyone’s perspectives are included.
