 What an amazing term the Grade 1 and 2 students have had whilst working with textiles. After learning how to weave and create their own baskets, the Grade 1 and 2 students then learned the valuable skill of sewing. The students first practised threading their needle and tying a double knot at the end of the wool so their stitches would not come undone.  

The first stitch they learnt was the ‘running’ stitch’ which created a nice border around their hessian material. The students then graduated to the ‘backstitch’ which required going forwards and backwards to create a solid line of stitching, they sewed a simple shape into their hessian using this stitch. The final skill was learning how to sew a button, there were fun button shapes to choose from like hearts, stars, flowers and teddy bears and of course they had to tie a double knot at the back to ensure the button would not come off. Next time a button comes off your shirts Mum and Dad, you know who to ask!
