Message from the College Principal

G’day everyone,

Welcome back to our new year.

It’s been a great start to the school year across our campuses, with everyone focused on improving their learning. I’ve been impressed by the excellent work in classrooms, and even more satisfying is seeing the fantastic way our students, their teachers and classroom assistants work together, creating an environment of collaboration and growth.

Since 2023, we’ve faced some staffing shortages, and while we weren’t as desperate as some schools in Gippsland, this year, we have started with a full contingent of staff. We’ve welcomed several new international teachers across all three campuses, who have become valuable members of our learning community, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our classrooms.

We have seen an increase in enrolment numbers, with Years 7-9 now boasting five form groups in each year level. At the same time, numbers at the Churchill and University campuses have also increased, with enrolments continuing.

This term, we’re looking forward to the College Athletics, where all three campuses will come together to celebrate the spirit of competition and community. It’s an event that showcases the teamwork and school pride that makes this such a great place to be.

As the year progresses, I encourage all of you to continue pushing yourselves academically, engaging in the many opportunities available and making the most of the incredible support from our dedicated staff.

Here’s to another fantastic year ahead, full of growth and achievement.

Young Citizen of the Year

A belated congratulations to Claire Lindsay for being recognised as the Latrobe City's Young Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day ceremony. Claire is currently in Year 11, having completed Year 10 at the Churchill Campus in 2024.

(As written by Latrobe City)

Claire is a dedicated young leader whose contributions to the Latrobe City community are both inspiring and impactful. As a key figure in the Blue Light program, she has worked to build positive relationships between local youth and law enforcement, fostering a safer, more connected community. Claire’s leadership also shines in the Community Leading Project, where she has directed initiatives that engage youth in addressing local issues and driving meaningful change. Claire’s achievements have been recognised with her selection as an ABC Takeover Latrobe Valley award winner. During the Latrobe Valley Takeover Week, she will share her inspiring story, encouraging other young leaders in the community. Claire has served as Mayor of the Latrobe City Youth Council, representing young people’s voices and advocating for initiatives that benefit local youth. Her roles as School Captain and House Captain at Kurnai College Junior Campus further demonstrate her ability to inspire and lead. Claire’s experience as a Peer Support Leader and at the School for Student Leadership has honed her skills, making her a positive force for change. Claire’s unwavering dedication to community service, leadership, and youth advocacy makes her a deserving candidate for Young Citizen of the Year.

As worthy mention to Kirra Hanson (Morwell Campus - Year 10), who was also nominated for the Young Citizen of the Year Award.

Year 7 Welcome BBQ

It was a privilege to provide musical entertainment for our new Year 7 students and their families. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and warmly welcome you all to our learning community.

Learn an Instrument

Kurnai College offers students across its three campuses the opportunity to be part of a vibrant and engaging music program.

The program caters for students with mixed abilities and interests, whilst providing numerous learning and performance opportunities.

Specialist instrumental tuition is available for a variety of instruments including woodwind, brass, percussion and stringed instruments.

Learning a musical instrument can help develop a variety of skills, from improving concentration and memory to boosting creativity and self-discipline. Plus, it's a great way to make new friends and express yourself in ways words cannot.

If you’re interested in starting your musical journey or advancing your skills, please see your music teacher or contact the general office

College Athletics

Kurnai College will hold the Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 4th of March, normal classes will not be running. All students are expected to attend the athletics carnival and come along dressed in their house colours. They will compete against other Kurnai College students in their age group in athletic events. Students who place in the athletic events will have the opportunity to compete against students from other schools in the Wellington finals (in July). Students will also have the chance to compete in fun events such as limbo, water balloon throw, three-legged race and football kick. Students who do not participate in actual events are still encouraged to attend this event and cheer their house members on. This is a great fun day that promotes engagement within the school community. A free BBQ lunch will be provided, and the kiosk at the venue will be open for students to buy food.
