Teaching and Learning

From Ms Lehre P-1

In Maths, the Prep/Grade 1 class has been exploring the concept of capacity. Students estimated how much different sized vessels could hold, then tested their predictions using coloured sand and water. It was a fun, hands-on way to learn!

From Mr Collins 2-6

We like to mix things up when practising our spelling words in the 2-6 room. One day last week, the kids were tasked with attempting to write their words behind their backs. They were allowed to read their words during this process, but were far more focused on how to write backward than actually spell the words. They were then asked to put their books away and attempt to recall all of their spelling words. What a cracking task!

You may have seen or even had the opportunity to read your child's creation of a revised PM Book. In the 2-6 room we have been focusing on the writing process, especially revising our writing and making improvements. For this task, each student was given a PM Book to read, revise, edit and then publish. The changes made varied from minor to extreme, depending on the age and ability of the student. They were all very proud of them and were very excited to show them off at home.

This week we have continued the writing process, but have streamlined it by attempting to plan and draft in 1 session. To do this, the writer needs to be able to quickly generate an idea so they can begin planning as soon as possible. But where do good ideas come from for Narrative writing? Sometimes it may be a feeling, our interests, other stories, something they have experienced before... Or it could be the skeleton of an unknown animal inside an IGA salad tub. I can't wait to see what stories they create from this writing stimulus.

Art

In Art, students have been learning about the artist Alma Thomas and her beautiful use of colour and pattern. They created their own circle dot paintings using three colours, carefully arranging them in patterns.

MARC News from Mrs Gentry

In MARC this week….

Term 3 is a busy one as we celebrate Book Week. This year marks the 80th anniversary of CBCA Book Week. In our MARC lesson we read the 6 short listed books in the Early Childhood category and voted for our favourite. Our voting slips are in suitcases ready to be opened during Book Week.
