This week, our Year 1 students have been exploring addition and subtraction, with a focus on building their confidence with number facts and understanding how numbers can be broken apart and put back together.
Today our Year 1s focused specifically on part-part-whole thinking with subtraction. Students used part-part-whole models to organise their thinking and understand that when we subtract, we take one part away from the whole to find the part that is left. For example, students might start with a whole of 18, take away a part of 3, and discover that 15 is left. They then made the connection between their model and the written equation: 18 − 3 = 15.
Students were able to represent their thinking using both a part-part-whole model and a written equation, helping them see the connection between what they can build, draw and write.
