Excursions

Coming up in the next few weeks we have the Katanning Sheep Expo, the WANTFA Weed Control Demonstration Day, Dowerin Sheep and Fleece Judging, and of course Dowerin Field Days!  Please ensure permissions are back to the College before the event.

Sheep

The beginning of Term 3 usually means marking the Merino lambs.  Cert III students have been helping out and completed some Identify and Draft practicals.

Our Merino lambing percentage average for the year has come in at 110%, which has definitely made us all happy. The College's culled Poll Dorset ewes reached top of the sale at Muchea, fetching $309/head! The rams also topped the sale at $290/head.  Classing the ewe hoggets is underway, as is Open Day preparation, and getting the Poll Dorset rams ready for display.

Grower Group Alliance Forum '25

The College was lucky enough to be provided 3 tickets to the Grower Group Alliance Forum by Food, Fibre and Timber Industries Training Council.  Two of our Certificate III in Agriculture (with a focus on cropping) students accompanied Farm Manager, Mr de Beer, to the forum where they were able to mingle with industry representatives and hear presentations from various industry groups such as CSIRO, Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework, and Salty Solutions.

Fred de Beer and Ainsley Crippen attended.

General happenings

There has been a lot of action on the College Farm of late.  Driving lessons to obtain green licences, spraying, early preparation for Open Day, shearing, marking piglets, Pigs In School training, cleaning up the butchers shop, checking cows, marking lambs, fencing training with representatives from Galagher, fixing up the sheep yards ... and the jobs go on!
