Hello and welcome back to Term 2 with Year 4B! One week down and already so much we’re learning.

In English we are learning all about informative texts. We can already spot lots of the language and techniques an author uses when they’re writing to inform and teach us. We’re also learning how to answer questions about informative texts that show that we understand them by including evidence to explain our thinking. We can’t wait to start putting together our own informative texts very soon!

We’re starting the term with lots of number strategies in Math. We know patterns for adding and subtracting odd and even numbers as well as all the different ways we can solve addition and subtraction problems. We’ve shown lots of improvement in our recall of multiplication and division facts because of all the practice we’ve been doing at home. Later on this term we’ll be working with time (no time like the present to start practicing time at home too!).

We kicked off our Science unit last week looking at how living things rely on non-living things to survive in a habitat. We can also tell you the three types of living things in a food chain (producers, consumers and decomposers) and the job they have in order to keep an ecosystem balanced. This is really going to come in handy for our English assessment later this term (stay tuned).

Finally in HASS we are continuing the learning we began at the end of last term about the history of Australia prior to European contact. It’s been fascinating learning about so many of the incredible ways of living and knowing of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Did you know that if we converted years to metres to represent European time in Australia and tried to walk it that you would only have to walk 238 metres, but it’s estimated you would have to walk about 65km (!!!) to cover our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ time in Australia? Our history is so important to shaping our perspective of the world and we are having a great time diving into the past.

We hope everyone has a great Term 2!
