Principal's Message

Term 2 Week 2 1 May 2026
From the Principal
Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much to all the parents and caregivers who managed to come along to our Writer’s Toolbox parent information session. Mr Anthony Sharp did a wonderful job presenting to all of us and it was great that we could do some writing ourselves! If you could not come along, please do not worry, I filmed it and I am putting together a video to be sent out to all of our families. Thank you again to Mr Sharp and the Writer’s Toolbox team.
Congratulations to all our Year 4 to 6 Merit Award Recipients, we are so proud of you!
It was amazing getting to listen to the Senior Strings at assembly this week. I thank them and Mrs Trudy Weekes for all the hard work they're doing. I was also drawn to the hall in the middle of the day this week, by the sound of the Chamber Strings, who I found practising intensely to get ready for Fanfare. Still talking about music, next Wednesday night the Chamber Strings are competing at the Queensland Youth Music Awards at Saint Peters College at 6:00 PM and I am very excited to listen to them.
The Wellbeing Warriors are a wonderful initiative in our school, with these students providing support and guidance to other children during lunchtime. This week at assembly, we celebrated and thanked our Wellbeing Warriors for all the time they give up for others. Thank you to them and the fabulous teachers who oversee them, Ms Hannah Ersser and Ms Lea Benjamin.
We also have another outstanding group of students in our school, our Library Monitors and 4 of them were presented with their badges for all the service they provide to our school. Congratulations and thank you to these wonderful children.
We had a very positive P&C meeting this week and I want to thank our P&C President Mrs Phoebe Anderson and our Secretary, Mr Michael Archbold. They are really flying the flag for the P&C at the moment, as are our members who come to the meetings regularly. I sincerely hope that when we have the AGM that we have people who want to become our treasurer, our secretary and of course our president.
Yesterday, several of our children went to the District Cross Country Trials, and I'm pleased to say a number of them went through. It was a shame the weather was quite inclement. Speaking of trials, next week we have the 10- to 12-year-old boys' football (soccer) trials, as well as tennis trials. All the best to these children.
We have a big week coming up next week. Monday is the Labour Day public holiday, so there is no school on Monday 4th May. As soon as we start school again on Tuesday, it is going to be our school photographs. Make sure your children are looking their best including, black shoes, white socks, additional jewellery and nail polish etc. The photos are taking place on both Tuesday and then also Thursday.
Congratulations to all children who are going in the Australian Primary Mathematics School Olympiad (APSMO). These are very difficult and I admire all the children who are undertaking it.
I'm very lucky as I've got a couple of opportunities next week to go to professional development. On Wednesday, our reading team is attending our Reading Collaborative Learning Community, where we connect with the region and other schools. The very next day I get to go with Mrs Shelley Lee and Mr Thomas Corbett to a professional development session on Primary Curriculum Leaders.
This Friday, our wonderful P&C is a putting on a Mother's Day Stall. They cannot do it alone, please reach out and see if you can help out - especially all of you Dads!!
I will end by giving shout-outs to our Guidance Officer, Mr Cliff Makemson, as this fortnight, we celebrate Guidance Officers. Mr Makenson embodies my idea of what makes GOs great; he loves kids and gets them, he empathises and supports families, and he connects with us as staff too. Mr Makemson has been at Ironside a short time but is making a big difference.
P.S. Please see the gallery section of our newsletter to see some photos of our beautiful ANZAC Day service.
Have a wonderful week.
