STAGE 3 NEWS
Stage 3 students loved performing ‘We Are the World’ at assembly. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to watch our performance. We have also been busy practising for our whole school play. We’re excited as costumes and sets are being prepared, and we’re learning our lines and new songs. A big thank you to Mrs D for working hard to make this performance possible!
We are working hard in class, especially as we fine-tune our multiplication and division skills. We have learnt how important it is to know our times tables, and some students are encouraged to practise these at home so multiplication and division become fluent and easy to solve.
In writing this term, Stage 3 have been working diligently on their information reports, exploring a wide range of fascinating topics including the history of art, the evolution of games, the story of chocolate, the invention of alarm clocks, the Olympics, Neil the seal, and significant crimes that changed the world, among others. Additionally, they have been honing their free writing skills, focusing on incorporating specific vocabulary and using complex punctuation such as dashes and ellipses to enhance their expression.
In reading, we have continued exploring the text Boy Overboard. Last week, we focused on learning about refugee camps, where the main characters find themselves during their journey to Australia. Our discussions revealed that although these camps are meant to be temporary, many families end up living in makeshift shelters within them for years. We learnt about the hardships faced by people in these camps, including limited access to food and no means of earning an income. This has given us a deeper understanding of the challenges refugees endure and reminded us how fortunate we are to live in Australia.
On Monday, Stage 3 students had the wonderful opportunity to work with Tobie White from ASC. Together, they created snap circuits, experimented with circuits using lights, made music and fan circuits, and learnt about transmission lines and energy sources. This engaging visit was a great extension of our Science unit, where students have been investigating electricity and how circuits work.
This term the students have been exploring the fascinating world of electricity. Throughout our investigations, students have been using the Predict, Observe and Explain (POE) process to make predictions, carefully observe what happens and explain their findings. Students have enjoyed designing and creating simple electrical circuits using batteries, wires and light bulbs. While our circuits have not always worked on the first attempt, these challenges have provided valuable opportunities for students to develop their problem-solving skills, investigate possible solutions and demonstrate persistence. There has been great excitement each time a successful circuit has resulted in a glowing light bulb! As the term has progressed, we have introduced a new element to our circuits each week, allowing students to explore how different materials affect the flow of electricity. Through these practical investigations, students have developed an understanding of conductors and insulators and how these materials can be used within an electrical circuit. As a part of our investigations, students will be creating a potato battery using a copper strip, a zinc nail and a potato. They will investigate whether a chemical reaction between the potato and the two different metals can generate a small electrical current. Students will then observe whether this current is sufficient to power a small light bulb. It has been wonderful to see the students’ curiosity, enthusiasm and persistence throughout our electricity investigations.
The students have also been fortunate to have Indy’s grandmother, Libby, visit the classroom and share her expertise in sketching landscape scenes and using watercolours. Using the work of renowned Australian artist Albert Namatjira as inspiration, Libby guided the students through a range of sketching and watercolour techniques. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and the results of Libby’s expertise and guidance can be seen in the beautiful artwork they created. Thank you very much Libby for your time and knowledge, it was invaluable.
