Learning about bugs

In B2, we have been learning all about insects as part of our information report writing. During our art lessons, we created stained glass beetles and collaged beetles. The students enjoyed exploring different materials and techniques to bring their insect art to life.

Aboriginal STEM Learner’s Congress

Last week 3 of our Aboriginal students, Shay, Caleb and Nate, attended the annual Aboriginal STEM Learner’s Congress at Adelaide Oval to explore STEM Pathways, connect with community and learn about Aboriginal knowledge, culture and innovation. This event was attended by 779 First Nations students from 187 schools across South Australia!

We were Welcomed to Country by Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Marrutya O'Brien, a senior Kaurna and Narungga man. Nate was lucky enough to be introduced to and get a photo with Uncle Mickey.

We heard from inspiring keynote speakers, Premier Kyam Maher and saw a powerful performance by Dem Mob, a Pitjantjatjara music group who not only rap but also teach their language through songs.

The students attended workshops where they learned about Aboriginal Navigation using stars, built battle bots, explored deltahedra and Shay even got to make lip gloss using native ingredients. These workshops provided our students with opportunities to work collaboratively, think creatively and explore how STEM is applied in real world settings.

It was an incredibly rewarding experience, and we enjoyed watching Shay, Caleb and Nate feel pride in their culture and identity, build friendships with each other and with other young Aboriginal STEM Learners.
