Why Flexible Open Learning Spaces Still Matter

As we have welcomed prospective families through our school during this year's Prep enrolment process and school tours, and discussed the many questions parents have asked about how our children learn, one question, in particular, has emerged time and time again:

"Why does your school have open learning spaces?"

It is a simple question, but one that has provided an opportunity to reflect on the journey our school has taken and why, many years ago, we chose to move beyond the traditional model of one teacher, one class and one classroom.

The answer is deeply connected to our Catholic identity, our commitment to the whole child and our belief that the way we organise learning can make a genuine difference to how children learn, grow and flourish.

Our Flexible Open Learning Spaces were not created simply because they looked different or because open learning was a new educational idea. They were developed from a deliberate belief that the environments in which children learn influence the way they connect, collaborate and develop as learners.

As we reflect on the questions being asked by families today, we are reminded that the reasons behind that decision remain just as relevant.

Creating Learning Communities Within Our School

Our approach to open learning is not about placing large numbers of children into one undifferentiated space.

Instead, we have intentionally created distinct learning communities across the school:

Prep Learning Community
Year 1/2 Learning Community
Year 3/4 Learning Community
Year 5/6 Learning Community

Within each of these communities, two or three classes work together within a shared Flexible Open Learning Space.

This structure provides the best of both worlds.

Students experience the security and belonging of a smaller community where they know their teachers, their peers and their place within the group, while also benefiting from opportunities to learn beyond the boundaries of a single classroom.

The environment enables teachers to collaborate, share expertise and respond more effectively to the diverse needs of learners.

This model creates learning communities that are large enough to provide flexibility, diversity and opportunities for collaboration, yet small enough to foster strong relationships, a deep sense of belonging and a genuine knowledge of every child, while ensuring that explicit, intentional teaching remains at the heart of learning.

Why Did We Choose This Path All Those Years Ago?

Our decision to embrace Flexible Open Learning Spaces was grounded in a Catholic vision of education and a commitment to continually improving the learning experiences we provide for our students.

At the heart of Catholic education is a belief in the dignity and uniqueness of every person.

Every child who walks through our doors is known as an individual, a child with particular gifts, strengths, needs and potential.

Our approach to learning must therefore reflect this belief.

The question was never simply... “How can we fit children into a classroom structure?”

The deeper question was... “How can we create an environment that enables each child to flourish?”

Our learning model is one response to that question. It reflects a willingness to think differently about how schools can be organised, how teachers can work together and how students can be supported to achieve their potential.

Importantly, our model was never about removing structure.

In fact, effective open learning relies on highly intentional design. The environment must be carefully organised so that it remains calm, purposeful and focused on learning. Clear routines, shared expectations and explicit teaching ensure that the openness of the space enhances learning rather than becoming a distraction.

Open learning is not learning without structure.

It is a more flexible structure. A structure designed to respond to learners.

Strengthening Teacher Practice Through Collaboration

One of the most significant benefits of this model is the impact it has on teacher collaboration and professional growth.

When teachers work alongside one another within a shared learning community, they have daily opportunities to observe, model and learn from each other’s practice. They can share expertise, discuss student needs, refine approaches and problem-solve together in real time.

Some of the most powerful professional learning happens through these everyday interactions: watching a colleague implement an effective strategy, seeing how another teacher responds to a learner’s needs, or sharing ideas that strengthen classroom practice.

This collaborative approach accelerates teacher growth and enhances consistency across each learning community. Students benefit from shared expectations, aligned teaching practices and a collective understanding of how best to support their learning.

Rather than teachers working independently behind classroom doors, our learning communities create a culture where educators learn with and from one another, continually strengthening their practice for the benefit of every child.

A Different Way of Thinking About Learning

The traditional single-classroom model has served schools and communities well for generations. It provides structure, familiarity and a strong sense of class identity.

However, we also recognise that no two children learn in exactly the same way.

Children have different strengths, interests, personalities and learning needs. Some thrive through collaboration and discussion, while others benefit from quiet spaces for concentration. Some require additional support, while others need opportunities for extension and deeper challenge.

Flexible Open Learning Spaces allow us to respond to this diversity.

Within each learning community, students can work independently or collaboratively. They can engage in focused learning, discussion, creativity, inquiry and problem-solving. Teachers can work together to group students according to their learning needs, providing targeted support and extension opportunities.

This creates greater opportunities for personalised learning and differentiation, allowing teachers to provide targeted support, appropriate challenge and learning experiences that respond to the individual strengths, needs and readiness of every child.

It also supports students to develop independence. Children learn to make decisions about their learning, manage their time, collaborate with others and take increasing responsibility for their progress.

These are not just skills for school. They are skills for life.

Why it Still Matters Today

Many years have passed since our school began this journey, yet the principles behind Flexible Open Learning remain highly relevant in today’s educational landscape.

The world our children are growing up in values creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and adaptability.

Students need to be able to work with others, solve unfamiliar problems, think independently and respond confidently to change.

Learning is no longer simply about knowing the right answer. It is about knowing how to learn.

Our learning communities provide an environment where these capabilities can develop every day. Students have opportunities to collaborate, question, create and problem-solve while receiving the support and challenge they need.

Teachers continue to work together within their communities, sharing expertise and ensuring that learning experiences are purposeful and responsive.

What may have seemed innovative many years ago is now strongly aligned with what we understand about preparing children for their future.

More Than a Different Kind of Classroom

When families visit our school and ask, “Why open learning?” our response is about much more than the physical design of our buildings.

Our Flexible Open Learning Spaces are a visible expression of what we believe about children.

We believe every child is capable
We believe every child is unique
We believe children learn through relationships and from one another
We believe teachers are stronger when they collaborate
And we believe every child deserves to experience success, challenge and belonging.

Our model allows us to bring these beliefs to life. It enables teachers to draw on shared expertise, allows students to be grouped according to their learning needs, and provides spaces for concentration, collaboration, creativity and exploration.

It allows us to personalise learning without losing our sense of community.

In a Nut Shell

So, when parents ask: "Why open learning?

Because our children are all different.

Because their futures are changing.

And because, many years ago, we made a commitment to create learning environments that would help every child become the person they are called to be.

Our Flexible Open Learning Spaces are not simply a legacy of a decision made in the past. They continue to reflect our Catholic vision of education, a vision that values every child, responds to individual needs and creates communities where students can learn, grow, belong and flourish.

That commitment remains as relevant today as it was then.
