Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,
The past two weeks, our Year 3 and Year 5 students have been completing the annual NAPLAN testing program. Students complete tests related to numeracy, reading, writing, spelling and punctuation skills. These results will be provided to families later this year. Our College makes use of this data to evaluate our teaching and learning programs to ensure that our planning, content and practice cater to student needs. We are proud of the way our students approached the NAPLAN testing with positivity. The tests are adaptive to student skills and are interactive, providing tools and supports as they complete the questions.
This week, we farewell Ms Oliver who will be commencing family leave. We thank Ms Oliver for her contributions to Hazel Glen College and look forward to hearing her good news and meeting her new arrival. We welcome Ms Jacobs and Mr Jones back to HGC who will be teaching 5E for the remainder of the year.
We enjoy hearing our students share with us their experiences of learning at home particulary with real life maths, whether it be cooking in the kitchen with a family member, helping with the shopping, car trips and day trip fun. There are so many opportunities to support your child's learning outside of our College. Please enjoy the video link to find out more about how you can help your child develop their numeracy skills.

Our Student Representative Council, led by Ms Reid have been meeting this term and students are sharing their ideas on behalf of their classmates for how we can continue to improve and create further engaging opportunities for all.
We have started our Prep Tours for 2027 and have been having a pleasing response to the attendance for these. We look forward to welcoming many more families to our Hazel Glen Primary Years community for next year. We have also been spending time at the Hazel Glen Kinder meeting families and building cross-College connections. If you know of anyone seeking school enrolment for next year, please let them know to book on one of our upcoming tours or coffee and chat sessions.
Our Year 7 Information Evening was held last night in the PAC and it was great to see so many of our Year 6 families attend to learn more about the wonderful College programs on offer as our students transition to the Secondary Years. If you have not yet had a chance, please book on a tour to experience the state of the art learning spaces, programs and experiences that our College offers to our students. If you have any questions about the Year 7 transition, please reach out to your child's class teacher for further information.
Remember to support your child with their home reading throughout the week. We have been promoting to all classes to remember to read five nights a week to promote a love of reading and to support developing their fluency, imagination and general knowledge. Regular practice of reading supports students progressing with this important life long skill. Our students have enjoyed sharing their chosen books with each other and their teachers. We hope that you can set aside time to promote reading at home.
Thank you for supporting our teachers in their follow-up on student uniform. Our uniform guidelines have been decided with parent input, and it is important that students are in the correct uniform and adhering to the guidelines as this forms our community identity, College pride and a sense of belonging. We request that students do not wear cosmetics to school, hair colours to not be extreme and uniform items are as described in the guidelines, particularly shorts which need to be black and mid thigh (no bike shorts). We have seen an increasing amount of jewellery being worn by students and although these may be favourite pieces, they are not permitted to be worn to school unless they adhere to the uniform guidelines. We thank you for your support with this.
