Assistant Principals' Report

2026 NAPLAN
A big congratulations to all Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed the NAPLAN assessments over the past two weeks. We are incredibly proud of the confidence with which students approached these tests, as well as the persistence and determination they demonstrated throughout.
Thank you also to our teachers for their preparation and support, ensuring students felt ready and confident. This included familiarising students with the online platform, practising test formats, and building strategies to help them approach each task with confidence. Thank you also to our IT team for their support with NAPLAN.
Easter Bonnet Parade
On Thursday 2nd April, the Primary Years will be holding our annual Easter Bonnet/Hat Parade.
Students are encouraged to make their own bonnet or hat at home and bring it along on the day to participate in the parade. Please do not include food items (including chocolate Easter eggs) on the bonnet or hat due to students with food allergies. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and families to get creative and join us in celebrating the end of the term as a Primary Years community.
The parade will be held in the Gym and will begin at 9:00am. Families are warmly invited to attend and view the amazing hat creations. We will also have our Easter Raffle and a very special guest in attendance.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Clubs Program
Our Clubs Program has officially begun for 2026, and we are excited to offer a wide range of clubs for students to attend during break times. These clubs provide students with opportunities to build connections with new peers who share similar interests, as well as to connect with staff within the Primary Years. Participation in clubs also supports student wellbeing by fostering a sense of belonging, confidence, and engagement in College life.
We would like to thank all staff and teachers who have generously volunteered their break times to facilitate a club this year. Without their commitment and care, our Clubs Program would not be possible.
Our Student Representative Council has also been busy gathering student voice around the Clubs Program, and we hope to introduce additional clubs in Term 2. All classrooms have been provided with a clubs poster. We look forward to updating you about some of the exciting things happening in our clubs throughout the year.
Term 1 Learning Expo
We are excited to invite families to our Primary Years Learning Expo on Friday 27th March from 2:10–3:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to visit classrooms and celebrate the learning that has taken place throughout the term.
Year 5 students will be showcasing their learning in the Gym, including a Performing Arts performance at 2:20pm and 2:40pm. Families are welcome to enter the College grounds from 2:10pm via the front gates. During the Expo, all students are expected to remain with their classroom teacher. We look forward to sharing our students’ learning with you!
Home Reading
We have continued to focus on Home Reading by acknowledging those students who have worked hard at ensuring that they are reading at home at least 5 nights each week and recording their reading in their student diary. Congratulations to Jack in Year 4 and Kai in Year 1 who were awarded Home Reading Champion Awards at assembly last week.
At our next Primary Years assembly, we will also be recognising a class in Prep to Year 2 and a class in Year 3 to 6 whose students collectively have recorded the most nights reading by awarding the class our Reading Rockets trophies.
Harmony Day
We are celebrating Harmony Day and World Down Syndrome Day on Monday 23rd of March. This special day is a celebration of the rich diversity within our College community and is an opportunity for students to learn, share, and appreciate what makes us all unique. We will be completing activities within our classrooms throughout the day to reflect this.
On Monday the 23rd of March, students are encouraged to:
- Wear odd or mismatched colourful socks for World Down Syndrome Day
- Wear a “splash” of orange alongside their HGC uniform in honour of Harmony Day, symbolising inclusivity and respect.
A big thank you to Mischa Morgan Curry (Wood House Leader) and Wood House for their organisation and coordination of this day. We’d love your support in making this day meaningful. Let’s come together to celebrate harmony, diversity, and unity at HGC!
Attendance
Every Day Counts at Hazel Glen College
At Hazel Glen College, we know that strong attendance sets the foundation for student success. Being at school every day gives children the best chance to learn, grow and feel connected to their school community.
Why Regular Attendance Matters
Each school day plays an important role in your child’s learning journey. Consistent attendance helps students to:
- Build strong learning foundations by developing essential skills and knowledge across all curriculum areas
- Develop socially and emotionally through friendships, daily routines and positive interactions that foster confidence and belonging
Maintain learning momentum, reducing gaps in understanding and avoiding unnecessary stress or overwhelm
Understanding Attendance Patterns
To help families stay informed and supported, we monitor attendance using the following categories:
- Repeated Absences: 5–10 days absent per term
- Ongoing At-Risk Absence: 11–15 days absent per term
- Chronic Absence: 16–25 days absent per term
We recognise that absences can sometimes be unavoidable, particularly due to illness. However, regular attendance and punctuality remain key contributors to your child’s academic progress, wellbeing and connection to school.
How You Can Support Your Child’s Attendance
Positive routines and early conversations can make a big difference. Families can support strong attendance by:
- Talking openly about school — ask your child how they’re feeling, what they enjoy and if anything is worrying them
- Being aware of potential challenges, such as:
- Bullying or cyberbullying
- Feeling disconnected or isolated
- Learning difficulties or feeling overwhelmed
- Low engagement or motivation
- Friendship or teacher relationship concerns
- Competing commitments
- Feeling misunderstood or culturally excluded
- Celebrating attendance achievements, reinforcing the value of consistency and punctuality
- Modelling commitment, by demonstrating responsibility and reliability in everyday life
- Encouraging participation in school activities, sports or clubs to strengthen friendships and belonging
- Establishing consistent routines, including:
- Adequate sleep
- Completing homework
- Packing school bags the night before
- Eating breakfast and arriving on time
- Planning transport arrangements (for example, walking with a friend) Working in Partnership
Every day truly counts. If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, we encourage you to contact their classroom teacher early so we can work together to create a supportive plan. By partnering with families, we can help ensure every student enjoys a positive, consistent and successful school experience.
