Planning for 2027

While our current focus is very much on ensuring Term 4 is a success in every sense of the word, we are also continuing our preparations for the 2027 school year.

We are aware that some families have been in contact with other schools in the area, so we ask that any families who intend to move their child from Sacred Heart Kew for next year please notify the school via admin@shkew.catholic.edu.au. This will greatly assist us, as we too, have had interest from families in other schools, wishing to enrol their children at Sacred Heart Kew for 2027.

Thank you to the families who have already communicated their intentions and helped us maintain the most up-to-date information regarding student enrolments for 2027.

Our planning for classes next year has been based on our current known enrolment numbers. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to refine our planning and allocate resources to support our school programs and students’ learning.

As part of this process, we recognise that parents and carers may have information they would like to share regarding their child’s learning, wellbeing or individual support needs. We encourage families to communicate any relevant information they would like the school to consider as part of the planning process directly with School Leadership via emailprincipal@shkew.catholic.edu.au by 6 November.

While we value the insights families bring, requests for particular teachers will not be accepted (as has been the case over many years at Sacred Heart Kew).

Class placements and classroom arrangements are determined by the school, taking into account a range of factors, including students’ learning needs, wellbeing, social dynamics and the overall balance of each class.

Our priority is to ensure that every student is supported to feel safe, connected and ready to learn as they begin the 2027 school year.

Thank you for your continued partnership, understanding and support as we prepare for the year ahead.

School Closure Days

A reminder that Monday 2 November is a School Closure Day and Tuesday 3 November is a public holiday.

Sport News

Division Athletics

Congratulations to Charlotte and Felix on their fantastic achievement in the Division Athletics, both finishing second in their respective 200m races last Tuesday!

Regional Athletics

Yesterday, both Charlotte and Felix participated at Regional Athletics.

The competition was fierce and both Charlotte and Felix ran incredibly well. What a FABULOUS achievement for both Charlotte and Felix to race for Sacred Heart Kew at Regional Athletics. We are so very proud of you both!

This is a WONDERFUL accomplishment and a testament to their hard work, determination and sporting spirit.

Year 3 Cricket Day

Today, our Year 3 students enjoyed participating in a Cricket Gala Day at Hislop Park. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their cricket skills, work collaboratively as a team and demonstrate our school values of respect, responsibility and collaboration. The day provided a chance for students to challenge themselves, encourage one another and enjoy being active alongside their peers. Well done to all our Year 3 students for their enthusiasm, positive attitudes and sportsmanship throughout the day! Thank you to Mr O'Shea, Miss Pigatto and Mrs Toomey for supervising and coaching the students.

Swimming Program

All students will participate in a five-day swimming program with qualified swim instructors at the MLC Swimming Centre from Monday 7 December to Friday 11 December (Week 10).

If your child will be absent during this time, please email admin@shkew.catholic.edu.au to let us know. This assists with planning and logistics for the MLC Aquatics organisers and swimming teachers.

MLC Aquatics has asked parents to complete an online form to provide information about your child’s current swimming capabilities. Please click on the link below to complete the form. You may need to complete this form on an iPad or computer rather than a mobile phone.

Please note: Placing students into swimming groups is a significant undertaking. Swimming teachers will continually assess students throughout the week and may adjust groups based on student performance and participation in the program.

What to Wear

Children are to wear their sports uniform to school each day. They may wear their bathers underneath their uniform. Children will also need to bring a separate bag to school each day containing the items listed below.

Items Required

  • Towel
  • Goggles
  • Bathers (or a change of underwear if wearing bathers to school)
  • Swim cap (optional)

Please ensure all items are clearly labelled, including your child’s sports uniform worn each day.

As there are other school events taking place during this busy period, your child’s swimming class day and time will be communicated to families in due course. These days and times may vary from day to day this year for a variety of reasons, some of which are outside our control.

Please note: Classes will depart school and walk to MLC prior to the start of their lesson. Students will have time to change before their lesson. Students will be in the water for 45 minutes and will change after their lesson.

We will require some parent helpers for our Junior students to assist them with changing. Classroom teachers will arrange this directly with parents. If you are available to assist on any of the days during the week, you must have a current Working with Children Check (WWCC). For a variety of reasons, parents are only to attend MLC if you have been scheduled by the classroom teacher. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation with this.

2027 Prep Transition

Next week, we look forward to commencing our Prep 2027 Transition Sessions as we welcome our newest members to the Sacred Heart Kew family.

There will be three Transition Sessions, along with a Parent Information Night, on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 28 October: Transition Session 1
  • Wednesday 4 November: Transition Session 2
  • Wednesday 11 November: Transition Session 3 and Parent Information Night

Last term, all Prep 2027 parents received an email outlining important information about their child’s transition, including their allocated session times.

We look forward to getting to know our newest learners and their families as they begin their Sacred Heart Kew journey. We can’t wait to officially welcome our 2027 Preps!

Kinder Buddy Program

On Tuesday 20 October, our Senior students had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with their four-year-old buddies at Little Assets Early Learning Kew, the kindergarten located across the road from Sacred Heart Kew.

Buddy programs provide valuable opportunities for children to build positive relationships, develop social skills and strengthen their sense of belonging within the wider school community. For our Senior students, this experience encourages leadership, empathy, patience and responsibility as they interact with and support younger children. For the kindergarten children, meeting our students helps build confidence, establish familiar connections with Sacred Heart and create a positive introduction to school life.

Next Tuesday, 27 October, we will welcome our kindergarten buddies to Sacred Heart Kew, where our Senior students will take them on a tour of the school. This visit will give the children an opportunity to explore our learning spaces, become familiar with the school environment and feel more comfortable in a school setting.

These shared experiences provide opportunities for students of different ages to learn from one another, develop friendships and strengthen connections between our school and the wider early learning community. We look forward to seeing our Senior students embrace their roles as positive role models and help our younger buddies feel welcomed, valued and excited about their future learning journey.

2026 School Closure Days

As was communicated to families last year...

* Time in Lieu (TIL)

The current Catholic Education Multi-Enterprise Agreement 2022 (the Agreement) has a formal time in lieu (TIL) process for teachers. The Agreement provides that a principal may require a teacher to undertake work and attend a school activity outside the normal hours of attendance (i.e., in excess of the 38 hours or normal hours for a part-time teacher) and when this occurs, it will attract TIL.

Principals should prepare for the accrual and acquittal of TIL through their annual planning process. The timing of the acquittal of TIL is at the discretion of the principal, having regard to the operational needs of the school and causing the least disruption to the educational program of the school.

Principals may elect to acquit TIL through designating days during the year on which all staff and students are not required to attend school.
