Around Our School

ISAC STEM Challenge
On Thursday 6th August, we took 8 students to compete in the Interschool Activity Challenge. The STEM challenge this year was to build the strongest bridge possible using only the resources they provide. We had a pack of playing cards, 40 popsicle sticks, 20 push pins, 20 drawing pins, a roll of thin double sided tape, 10m of twine and 200 staples. The other equipment only allowed was a stapler, scissors and a hammer. The bridge had to span about 900mm and no part of the bridge could touch the middle area or you would be disqualified.
We spent several sessions researching designs to construct and then had the opportunity to construct our ideas. When constructed, we could test out the constructed bridge and make any modifications or improvements.
We thought we had two designs that would give us a good chance at the challenge. Our design did hold a weight of around 6 and ½ kilograms but that wasn’t enough to move into the final round because there were several teams that held 10 kilograms and they went into the final.
The students did St Brendans proud with their efforts and behaviour. A big THANK YOU goes out to Sarah Gilroy Scott and Sarah Smith for providing the transport and encouragement to our two teams.
