Reflection and Celebration

Wednesday, April 1st, 2026

Hi everyone, and welcome to the final week of Term 1.

It has been an incredibly rewarding start to the year, and I want to extend a sincere thank you to the students, staff, and families who have welcomed me so kindly into the role of Acting Assistant Principal. Getting to know you has been the absolute highlight of my term.

Looking Back to Leap Forward

At our assembly last Friday, I spoke to the students about our learning disposition of Optimism. We discussed "seeing the bright side" and looking for the "silver lining" in our challenges. It was wonderful to see so many students nodding along to the idea that our mistakes are simply opportunities to grow and get even better.

As we move through these final days, our school-wide Wellbeing focus is Reflection. In our classrooms and out in the yard, we are encouraging students to look back over the last 10 weeks and celebrate the successes they have achieved. By reflecting on our wins and our challenges with an optimistic lens, we aren't just finishing a term—we are building on an exceptionally strong start to 2026 and ensuring we return for Term 2 with clear momentum and a positive path for even more growth.

Term 1 Highlights: Growth and Community

The start of 2026 has been defined by student agency, APS school spirit, and a strong sense of belonging. Some of our standout moments include:

  • The Start-Up Program: We began the year focusing on building relationships and understanding our school Rights, Values, and Learner Dispositions. It’s been a joy to see these successfully embedded into every classroom.
  • Harmony Day & International Women's Day: Our community came together to celebrate these two important days. We celebrated our diversity through a fantastic Harmony Day assembly performance, and engaged in meaningful conversations about equality for International Women's Day.
  • Prep Success: Our newest learners and their families have settled in beautifully, bolstered by the wonderful Welcome Drinks hosted by our Grade 1 families. It is these connections that make APS feel like home.
  • 2027 Prep Tours: Over the last two weeks, it has been a joy to introduce prospective families to APS. Grade 6 Leaders tour families through our learning spaces and seeing their reactions to our students’ engagement reminds us how lucky we are.
  • Academic & Sporting Spirit: From the strategic battles at our school Chess Tournament and the focus shown during NAPLAN, to the incredible grit of our swimmers at school, district, division, and regional meets, the APS spirit has been on full display.
  • Incursions, Excursions & Camps: Our Grade 6 students grew their independence at camp, while our Quantum Race Team saw STEAM in action during a high-octane excursion to the Formula 1. We also enjoyed many incursions this term, including the fantastic shelter building the Grade 3s completed this week.
  • Leadership Milestone: We are officially celebrating Shane Wilkie becoming our Substantive Principal. Shane’s vision and unwavering commitment to APS have been evident to me all term, and it is fantastic to have his leadership officially confirmed as we move forward together. Also, it was lovely to have Melissa visit students on Tuesday; the students' faces lit up when they saw her!

End-of-Term Events

Following on from our successful Tribes event last Friday, our House Leaders have been working hard on this week’s Trivia House Event. Students will be participating in themed activities across Art, Music, and Geography, culminating in a school-wide Kahoot quiz.

I want to extend a massive thank you to the students and staff who have put in so much effort behind the scenes to ensure these events run smoothly during such a busy final two weeks.

Happy Holidays!

I hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and relaxing holiday period with family and friends.

We look forward to seeing everyone back, refreshed and ready for Term 2 on Monday, April 20th.

Kind Regards

Luke Kleinig
