Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,

Throughout the year, we take opportunities to acknowledge our students for their academic and social/emotional achievements. This year's NAPLAN results have now been released in comparison to state results. This provides a valuable benchmark for us as a College to monitor our students' learning growth across their years of schooling and to review and evaluate our classroom programs to target specific student needs. Here is a summary of our student academic performance from NAPLAN.

2026 Primary Years NAPLAN Results

NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards, with student achievement shown against 4 levels of proficiency.

Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing.

Schools are compared to Network schools (Whittlesea) and other schools across the State by looking at the percentage of students who score a proficiency of exceeding and strong.

Students in Year 3 met or exceeded schools in our network in Reading, Writing, Punctuation & Grammar and Numeracy.

Students in Year 5 met or exceeded schools in our network and statewide schools in all areas of NAPLAN.

Students in Year 7 (Primary Years' Year 6 students in 2025) met or exceeded schools in our network in all areas of NAPLAN and met or exceeded statewide schools in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Punctuation & Grammar.

I would like to remind families of our uniform guide for Primary Years. Students in Year 6 have the option of wearing the Year 6 celebration jumper. Secondary Years uniform items are not to be worn by Primary Years students, and students will be requested to wear the correct uniform items. The Primary Years jumpers are listed on the uniform guide, and PSW can help you with selecting the correct items for Primary Years. The jumper choices for Primary Years are the following;

Windcheater V-neck
Windcheater Zip Jacket
Bonded Jacket
HGC Year 6 Jacket (to only be worn by this Year Level)

The Department of Education has made changes to Digital Learning Policies across schools, and these will take effect from next year. We have been making the transition over the past two years to prepare for these changes. More information will follow shortly, but a reminder that Prep and Year 1 students do not require an iPad for 2027. Students in year levels who currently have BYOD iPads will continue to bring their devices. If a device is no longer working, it is a parent's choice as to whether this is replaced. Please note that the College will not provide devices for 1:1 use for students without devices and instead will have class sets of devices that can be booked by the teachers where tasks may require digital device use.

This week, as a College, we have recognised National Bullying Week. This is a time to raise awareness beyond the work and education that takes place throughout the year to ensure that student safety is the priority within our College community. Everyone has a role to play when educating our College community about bullying and to upstand if and when bullying occurs by reporting for appropriate follow-up. The anti-bullying programs we have in place provide a continued focus on shared understandings and strategies to prevent, recognise, respond and report. We thank our parent community for their support of the College.

Next week, we celebrate Book Week and this event is always a favourite on our calendar. We look forward to seeing and hearing about everyone's costumes on Tuesday 25th of August. We will also be hosting our annual Primary Years Scholastic Book Fair, where books and treasures can be purchased either before or after school throughout the week.
