Athletics Carnival: 1500 and 800m events

Girton Grammar's Senior School Athletics Carnival is not too far away. In an effort to streamline the schedule on the day, the 1500m and 800m events for the Senior School Athletics Carnival were held over the past two weeks. Despite challenging conditions, over 60 students competed in the 1500m, while more than 90 took on the 800m. Without hesitation, the athletes rose to the occasion, delivering thrilling performances and achieving outstanding results – both individually and for their House.

Girton Grammar swimmers shine at ICCES Carnival

Girton Grammar swimmers made waves at the 2025 ICCES Swimming Carnival, securing an impressive second place overall with 1,095 points and dominating individual and relay events. With record-breaking performances, age group champions and strong team results, Girton once again proved itself as a powerhouse in the pool.

Girton Grammar’s athletes delivered standout individual performances, with four students crowned Age Champion:

Owen Barnes – Year 7 Boys Champion
Lauren Davenport – Year 7 Girls Champion
Azia Fong-Sutton – Year 9 Girls Champion
Henry Allan – Year 11/12 Boys Champion

Henry Allan's performance at the meet was a highlight, breaking three ICCES records in the 50m Freestyle (23.49), 50m Backstroke (26.12) and 50m Butterfly (25.90). Meanwhile, Year 9 star Azia Fong-Sutton dominated in her division, winning the 50m Freestyle (27.11) and 50m Backstroke (31.03), and setting two new records.

Girton Grammar continued its dominance in the relay events, setting new ICCES records in three team races:

Year 9 Girls Medley Relay – 2:14.43
Year 11/12 Boys Medley Relay – 1:55.83
Year 9 Girls 4x50m Freestyle Relay – 2:01.63

Girton Grammar swimmers secured high placements across all divisions:

Junior Girls – 3rd place (221 points)
Junior Boys – 4th place (201 points)
Intermediate Girls – 2nd place (246 points)
Intermediate Boys – 2nd place (225 points)
Senior Girls – 6th place (66 points)
Senior Boys – 1st place (136 points)

On 5 March Girton competed in the annual ICCES swimming championship at MSAC in Melbourne. A competition with a great team atmosphere and camaraderie, Girton has always performed well here, and this year was no exception.

A massive congratulations goes to our age champions: Owen Barnes (7 Frew), Lauren Davenport (7 Jenkin), Azia Fong-Sutton (9 Aherne) and Henry Allan (11 Jones). These students performed incredibly, with both Azia and Henry breaking several competition records in their respective age groups, some of which have been held for over 10 years.

Placing second overall was a noteworthy achievement for Girton and winning the Intermediate Girls shield is an amazing effort. A huge thank you goes to Mr Whitsed without whom it would be impossible for us to organise and attend these competitions. Thank you also to Mr Hoyt for cheering us on all day. With several of our students finishing first in their races at ICCES, they are now invited to attend the Victorian School Associations Championship later in the year, also at MSAC. We wish our swimmers the best of luck with their future sporting endeavours and congratulate them for representing our school so well.

ICCES Badminton

Congratulations to all the students who played in the ICCES badminton. It was a fun and enjoyable day in Melbourne. As for the junior girls team, they did amazing and finished third in their league, which was no small feat given how strong the other teams were. The boys did very well despite not finishing on the podium due to the strong competition. Unfortunately there were not enough girls available for the senior girls team, which would have been great, but hopefully we can field a team next year. Overall, there was great sportsmanship shown across the teams and we can’t wait for next year!

ICCES Table Tennis

Despite not emerging victorious, the 2025 ICCES table tennis competition has left our players with valuable experience, passion and many treasured memories that will no doubt be held closely. On Wednesday 5 March, nine of our highly skilled players spread across three teams (junior boys, senior girls and senior boys) went to MSAC in Melbourne to compete against other schools for the ICCES table tennis trophy. In a round robin tournament against each school, each player competed in one set of singles and two sets of doubles. All our teams triumphed over their competitors with skill and style, putting on an elegant show.

Our junior boys team – comprised of Archer Yuen (8 Frew), Matthew Henry (9 Frew) and Anderson Price-Brown (9 Riley) – placed third. The senior girls team – Isabel Weibgen (10 Riley), Siara Madina (9 Jenkin) and Shanali Wickramasinghe (10 Riley) – placed second. Finally, the senior boys team – Luke Fisher (11 Millward), Anas Mustafa (11 Riley) and Jesse Brook (10 Jenkin) – placed third. Overall, this placed Girton third in the combined rankings.

The ICCES table tennis competition was an incredibly valuable experience for our table tennis players, providing the opportunity to apply the techniques they have learnt in a competition environment. While it was unfortunate we were not able to return with a shield, the ICCES competition remains a much-loved event on the table tennis calendar.

Over the past few weeks, the Girton basketball co-curriculum has held its presentations for the Summer 2024/2025 season. Congratulations to the award winners and well done to all players on a great season. We also have a number of teams playing finals, and we wish these students and coaches the best of luck!
