Carlton Football Club members visit Sports Excellence

Girton Grammar School was privileged to receive a visit from Carlton Football Club players Jordan Boyd, Matthew Carroll and Lachie Fogarty when they came to Bendigo for their community camp.

A mix of Year 9 and 10 students and one eager member of staff (Mr Williams) were able to hear these players speak firsthand about the experiences, challenges and highlights they encountered on their individual journeys to becoming AFL players.

After never playing in the NAB league or any of the AFL’s elite junior pathways, Jordan Boyd was drafted to Carlton in the 2021 mid-season rookie draft at pick 20 after playing in the Victorian Football League for Footscray.

Lachie Fogarty, however, had a completely different journey. After playing junior footy at the Western Jets in the TAC cup and APS school footy for St Kevin’s throughout high school, he was picked up by Geelong in the 2017 national draft at pick 22 before being traded to Carlton after the 2020 AFL season.

Matthew Carroll, the youngest of the boys, also had an insightful journey to share. After a super season for the Sandringham Dragons and a standout game for the Victorian Metro side against both Victorian Countryside and South Australia, he got picked up by Carlton in the 2023 rookie draft at pick 15.

It was amazing to hear from these players and for our students to have the opportunity to ask their burning questions. We wish the boys and the whole club good luck for the 2025 season. Thanks to Mr McCarthy and Mr Hoyt for organising this for the students!

Girton Tennis Tournament 2025

Each year the Girton Tennis Tournament takes place at the Bendigo Regional Tennis Centre. Players are entered into either the boys’ or girls’ competitions in one of three sections: Junior (Year 7 and Year 8), Intermediate (Year 9 and Year 10) and Senior (Year 11 and Year 12). The tournament is played in a round-robin format followed by finals to determine the winners for each section. The results from this tournament are used to select players for the Girton representative tennis teams.

This year, the tournament was held on Wednesday 29 January, giving our students the opportunity to enjoy a game of tennis and catch up with friends before returning to school. We had an exceptional turnout this year, with 46 students entering the competition. Congratulations to the students who have been selected to represent Girton in tennis in 2025, and to those who won their respective sections:

  • Junior Male: Benjamin Bowles
  • Junior Female: Skylar Austin
  • Intermediate Male: Eden Muddle
  • Intermediate Female: Willow Kelly
  • Senior Male: Max Henderson
  • Senior Female: Isabella Bowles

The school extends a sincere thanks to all those who attended and assisted on the day, and to Mr Stephen Storer, who has had a long association with Girton and once again was instrumental in organising and facilitating the tournament.
