Wellbeing Update

Getting Ready for the Upcoming Social Media Ban

You may have seen recent announcements about the Australian Government’s upcoming social media restrictions. These new measures aim to create a safer online environment by setting clearer age limits for major social media platforms and improving online safety protections for young people.

At Lara Secondary College we recognise that social media plays a big role in teenage life, from connecting with friends to exploring interests and sharing creativity. However, we also know that balancing screen time, privacy, and wellbeing can be challenging. This change offers a valuable opportunity for students and families to reflect on healthy online habits and ways to stay connected beyond social media.

Understanding What’s Changing

For accurate details on age restrictions and enforcement, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s official guidance: eSafety: Social Media Age Restrictions

The Headspace website explains why the ban is being introduced and what it means for young people: Headspace: Social Media Ban – For Young People

Having Constructive Conversations at Home

Discussions about screen time and app use can sometimes be tricky. The University of Sydney has shared helpful strategies for reducing tension and keeping communication open during the transition: How to Minimise Family Conflict Over the Social Media Ban

Supporting Teens Through the Change

The Raising Children Network provides practical FAQs and guidance for parents of secondary school students, including advice on managing social media withdrawal and helping teens build balanced routines: Raising Children Network: Social Media Ban FAQs

Our School’s Approach

We will continue to educate students about digital wellbeing, cyber safety, and positive online behaviour through our wellbeing programs. We also encourage parents to have open conversations about how their children use technology and to set healthy boundaries together.

If you have any questions, please contact our school wellbeing team, or visit the links above for more information.

Together, we can help our students stay safe, balanced, and connected both online and off.

Warm regards,

Lara Secondary College Wellbeing Team
