National Close the Gap Day – Thursday, 19th March

📅 When is it? National Close the Gap Day happens on Thursday, 19 March 2026. On this day, people around Australia learn about ways to make health and life fairer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

🧠 What does “the gap” mean?

The “gap” is the difference in health, life expectancy, and access to services between Indigenous and non‑Indigenous Australians. Everyone should have the chance to live a long, healthy, and happy life—and this day reminds us of that.

⏳ How did it start?

National Close the Gap Day began in 2007, led by major health organisations and supported by well‑known Australians like Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe. They wanted to raise awareness and help create real change.

🎨 What happens on this day?

Classrooms may participate in the following -

  • 🎤 Listening to stories
  • 🎨 Creating artworks
  • 🤝 Talking about fairness and respect
  • 📚 Learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures

These activities will help us understand what the “gap” is and how we can make things better together.

💛 Why it’s important

  • ⚖️ It teaches us about fairness and equality.
  • 🌏 It helps us respect and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
  • 🤗 It reminds us that everyone can help make Australia a fairer place.
