Maths in the Kitchen: Cupcakes!

Year 5 and 6 students recently put their learning about mass and capacity into practice with a delicious hands-on challenge: making cupcakes.

As part of their Mathematics unit, students explored different units of measurement for mass and capacity, including identifying appropriate units and converting between measurements. They then applied this knowledge in a real-world context as they followed a cupcake recipe.

Students carefully measured ingredients, considering whether to use grams, kilograms, millilitres or litres, and worked together to ensure their measurements were accurate. The activity provided opportunities for students to practise reading and following instructions and  to work collaboratively as a class. 

It was fantastic to see students measuring, converting and creating while putting their mathematical knowledge to work in a meaningful and memorable way.
