What a wonderful start to the year we have had in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program! The enthusiasm and curiosity from our students has been fantastic, and it has been a joy to see them getting their hands dirty in the garden and busy in the kitchen.

A big congratulations to our second class, 3/4N, who began the program last week. We are so excited to have you join us and look forward to all the learning, growing, and cooking that lies ahead.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our incredible volunteers. Your time, energy, and support make such a difference, and this program simply wouldn’t be possible without you. We truly appreciate everything you do to help create such a rich and engaging experience for our students. Especially to Amanda (Chloe’s Mum) and Thu (Aria L’s Mum) for helping us in the first week.  We appreciate the time and effort you gave us.

Here’s to another fantastic term ahead filled with growth, discovery, and delicious food!

Student Reflections:

Jasmine - Today I worked with Aria, Giselle, Volkan, Aaron and  Jeslyn. We made bread sticks with extra cheese. It was so much so much fun. We made long lines of the bread only 10/20 centimetres .I really enjoyed my first time cooking in this school mixing all the ingredients together. It was my favourite part of cooking.

Eden - I made a vegetable carbonara. I cut/grated lots of things. I loved it. Also I love that we get to eat it after.

Evangelina - Today I made the dip. In the dip there was tomato, a lot of cheese and we also cut up carrots and that was my favourite part. It was so easy and fun. I was in a group called Zucchinis. The best part is we get to eat it and since I am in the zucchini  group it is my turn to stay behind and help clean up and set up the table.

Oliver - On my first day I cut onions and I cried so much and I made Italiano Salad. It was made with Purple cabbage, onions, Tomatoes, corn and olives. I wish to make rhubarb muffins. And I was in the carrot group.

Ryder - Today I learned how to cut olives and cut onions which made my eyes burn. I cut up some tomatoes and lettuce with Darek, Oliver, Ciara, Hailey and I.

Sienna N - At cooking I cut carrots, zucchini, capsicum, parsley and crushed garlic.  There were groups and I am an Eggplants. I had lots of fun making the main dish. I was a little bit scared when I was holding the knife and cutting the vegetables.  Soon I was not scared of holding the knife and cutting and I got used to it.  I am very excited to try the food because I have never had it before.

Jeslyn - At cooking today we made cheesy breadsticks with Jasmine, Aria  Aaron , Volkcan and Giselle. First, we put four then we added a bit of baking powder and next we added some salt.

Ciara - For kitchen gardening I was in a group of carrots and we cooked salad.  My mum was supposed to come but she did not, so I feel sad for her.  What I put in the salad was onions, olives, some more stuff but i can’t remember.

Yasmin - Today in kitchen garden we made a dip.The people in my group were Chloe Eddy, Alek, Moksh, Eva and me! In the kitchen we made this delicious dip with carrots, tomato and some cheese but I don't know the name. Since we were dip we got to stay back while the others went back to the classroom and wrote about what happend.

Fede - Today I made the main meal which was a zucchini carbonara with lots of cream and cheese.  It also had curly fettuccine, spaghetti, grated carrot and cheese. I hope I get bread group next week.

Lulubelle - Today I made Italiano salad with some nice spaghetti.  The funniest thing that happened is that Grace saw me crying because the onions got in my eyes.  I was like ‘‘GRACE I CAN'T SEE’’ and Grace was rolling on the floor laughing.  Anyways, less about that it was a really fun experience to have friends and the food.  We laughed, cooked and cleaned.  It was really fun to enjoy having friends and making food is my best thing. I love to cook!

Darek - Today I made italiano salad, I definitely hate this salad there’s tomato,

Cabbage, olives and onions so that ruined the chance of me eating the salad. My friend's food is cheese sticks. Then the main meal is zucchini carbonara and idk what the dip is then i only eat cheese sticks yippe.I know the foods we will make later will of course be bad.

Grace - today we made Italiano salad with some spaghetti  and the  funniest thing happened. Lulubelle was crying and said “ ahh ahh I can't see  guys actually help ‘’. I told her dont rub your eyes wash them so she washed them and I said “ ha ha ha ha LUlu did you use the water from the pan  or the tap but she said this “ I used warm water ‘’.  Then I laughed. It was the best day ever .

Giselle - In week 1 I found out I was in the Tomato group with Aria, Volkan, Aaron, Jeslyn, Jasmine and Giselle. Our helper was Thu ( Aria’s Mum ) and she was very helpful!!

The Ingredients were:

185g of melted butter, ½ a cup of cayman pepper, ½ a cup of baking powder, 2 cups of cheese and 2 cups of plain flour!

It actually was pretty easy, there were only a few steps so that was good.

Aria L - I am in the tomato group with Giselle, Volkan, Aaron, Jasmin and Jeslyn and I.

I made cheese straws with my mum {Thu Lek} and my group.

Ingredients : 185g of melted  butter, ½ a cup of salt ,½ a cup of cayman pepper,½ a cup of baking powder, 2 cups of cheese and 2 cups of plain flour.

Order of things :Preheat oven to 105 degrees  1. plain four 2. Cayman pepper 3. Salt 4.baking powder 5.melted butter 6.cheese  then mix until altogether and smooth .

After that roll the cheese dough into long lines then twist {optional you can keep it straight if you want to } . Then put the final product into the oven until brown/golden.  Then EAT hope you enjoy.
