Hello from 5V

What a great start to the year we’ve had in 5V! Students have taken to new routines, expectations, and greater levels of responsibility and accountability with aplomb and eagerness.

Each morning, our Class Circle has been a fantastic opportunity to settle in for the day, hear from each other, get to share announcements or moments of pride, and discuss our personal values and areas of potential growth. We’ve thought about when we’d travel to if we had a time machine, cringed or salivated at people’s ‘weird’ food combinations, decided on one thing we’d like to have unlimited amounts of, and so many more daily roll questions. Our unofficial homework for the term is to become permanently in charge of our school lunches or another area of the home.

We’ve welcomed a few new faces to Langwarrin Primary School, who are already feeling like long-time friends, have established some 5V traditions, and are finding the joy and satisfaction in the processes of learning.

As part of setting a positive and productive classroom culture, we’ve had conversations and deep thought around what makes a ‘best’ teacher and ‘best’ student, what determines each of our individual ‘best’, how that can be affected by day-to-day minutia (usually beyond our control), and the ways in which we can notice feelings, thoughts and distractions but train our mind to not linger on things – neuroplasticity is a wonderful thing!

Students have reflected on what they think of themselves, how they think they’re perceived by the world around them, how they would like to be perceived, and what daily actions they can take to become more like their ideal self. To follow this, we’ve also made melting bead pictures that represent our identity in some way: favourite sports, games, animals, colours, etc., which will decorate the room for the remainder of the year and serve as a reminder that who we are can largely be within our control and is determined by the accumulation of our daily actions and decisions.

It’s looking to be a great year ahead.
