Recycle Right Program - Monash Council

Recycle Right with Monash City Council!
Students in 5/6GN, along with our Learning Captain and Team Leaders, were lucky enough to take part in the Recycle Right Program run by Monash City Council, with Michelle visiting us as our fantastic guest speaker! We learned about the importance of putting the right waste into the correct bin and found out that soft plastics can be dropped off at local collection points at Woolworths. Michelle explained that tricky packaging like Pringles cans or UHT milk cartons cannot go into the yellow recycling bin because they are made of multiple blended materials that machines cannot separate. The team was fascinated to see how recyclable materials are transformed into new products, even learning about the machines that shred up recycled plastic and metal so they can be reused.
Keeping rubbish out of landfill is crucial, as once a landfill site is completely full, that land cannot be used for anything else. We also learned how vital it is to dispose of old batteries at dedicated collection bins in stores like Woolworths or Officeworks and to take e-waste (electronic waste) directly to the Monash Transfer Station.
To wrap up the session, we finished with an activity to test our knowledge! We each selected a piece of waste that Michelle had collected and had to place it into the correct bin. We were pretty amazing at this and showed we have great knowledge of how to recycle right. We learned so much valuable information that we can now put into practice every day, both here at school and at home!
